Asheville ~ Alvin William Rader, Jr. 78, of Asheville, died on Monday, June 7, 2010 at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.
He was born in McDowell County and was the son of the late Alvin William Rader, Sr. and Clyde Stepp Rader.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Franklin Rader.
He was a 1950 graduate of Marion High School and served in the US Navy during the Korean conflict.
Mr. Rader was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College. He was retired from Wachovia Bank and Trust as regional Auditor and Vice President, with 36 years of service. He was a member of the NC Official's Association and he refereed high school and college football for years. He was a member of the YMCA and served on the board of directors for many years and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Asheville.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis Denton Rader of Asheville; two daughters, Martha Sheppard and husband John of Hendersonville and Julie Mitchem and husband Billy of Bessemer City, NC; a son, Robert William Rader and partner, Al Davis; five grandchildren, Heather Longley and husband Mike, Jason and Matt Harris, Christopher and Kristin Blevins; two step grandchildren, Kelley and Justin Sheppard; three step – great grandchildren, Max, Hannah and Lucas Longley; two sisters, Jeanette Ostwalt of Troutman, NC and Lynda Rumfelt and husband Bennie of Clemmons, NC; a brother, Eugene Rader and wife Peggy of Houston, TX. He had a great-granddaughter due in August and is also survived by a friend, Elliot Granados.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Friday in the Crouch Chapel of First Baptist Church Asheville with Dr. Guy Sayles and Leah Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
