Frederick Daniel Cothran, 99, of Candler, died on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at his home.
A Buncombe Co. native, Frederick was a son of the late George Weston and Ada Zenora Revis Cothran. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Flora Oliver Cothran; son, Fred D. Cothran, Jr.; daughter, Dr. Anne Elizabeth Hartung; and seven siblings.
Mr. Cothran was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Later in life, he retired from the National Weather Service before then serving as a deputy for the Buncombe Co. Sheriff's Department under Tom Morrissey. Mr. Cothran was also a Free & Accepted Mason.
Mr. Cothran is survived by his daughter, Susan Cothran of Smyrna, GA; brother, Dempsey Cothran; four grandchildren, Chloe P. Mills, Alek O'Shields, Mariah O'Shields, and Kristie Roswech; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Cothran will held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. Interment will follow at Avery's Creek Christian Church Cemetery.
His family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
