Obituary

George Campbell “Cam” Dowdle went to be with the Lord on March 13, 2018, at the age of 50, surrounded by his family and friends after a year and half battle with cancer.

Cam was born in Charlotte, NC, and was a resident of Asheville, NC, for over 30 years. He was the son of Kathryn Jones Dowdle and of the late SGT George M Dowdle. He was a graduate of Franklin High School and AB Technical College.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sons, Specialist Hunter C. Dowdle, of the United States Army and wife Fallon P. Molony, Taylor J. Dowdle, of Asheville; daughter, Skylar M. Dowdle, of Asheville; their mother, Melanie B. Dowdle; and sister, K. Paige Dowdle, of Spartanburg, SC. He was loved by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He shared a special bond with his best friend of 30 years, Chuck Knowlton and wife Karen.

He was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member and Usher. He also played softball for the Blue and Teal teams for the church as well a Co-Ed team One Vision. He was employed at Mountain Credit Union as a mortgage originator for several years. Cam was known all over as “The Voice of the Lions” sports announcer for the Mars Hill University radio broadcast for both the football and basketball teams. He was a basketball coach since 2002 of both the Carolina Heat and Lady’s Explosion, both were organizations that he started himself. He also was a coach for several years for another local ladies basketball team named the Lady Royals. He was a fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels basketball and football teams for the duration of his life and would love to think he played a small part in whatever successes that they had. It comforts the family to know he has made it to Heaven and now gets to watch March Madness with a man he revered dearly in the late Dean E Smith.

His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at West Asheville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Darren Browning officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.David Clark, Nathan Bull, Chuck Knowlton, Mike Matthews, Tommy Austin, Jonathan Thomas, Danny Wills and David Haynes will serve as pallbearers.

The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave in Asheville. At other times, the family is at the home of Mrs. Kathy Dowdle.
