CANDLER – Parnell Carter, 82, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Mission Hospital, Memorial Campus.
Mr. Carter was born October 15, 1928, in Blackshear, GA, and was a son of the late Artimus Carter and Fledia Steedley Carter Bryant. He has resided in Asheville since 1953. He was also preceded in death by wife Louise Rhymer Laney Carter, who died in 2000; brothers Reinell Carter and Regal Carter; and great-granddaughter Emily
He was a graduate of Patterson High School, Patterson, GA, and the Winston Salem Barber College. He was the former owner-manager of Model Barber Shop, West Asheville. He was a past president of the West Asheville Optimist Club, West Asheville Lions Club; member of the West Asheville Business Association, West Asheville Masonic Lodge #665, and Deaverview Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Carter; daughters LaNita Carter Cloninger and husband Jack, and Teresa Carter Holt and husband Branson; step-daughter Linda Laney Eagle and husband Kenny; grandsons Justin Cloninger and Branson Carter Holt; step-grandchildren Kimberly, Richie and wife Sonya; step-great-grandchildren Dallas and Sandy; and sisters Myrtle Gordon of Houston, TX, and Margaret Strader of Blackshear, GA.
A funeral service for Mr. Carter will be at 6:00 p.m. Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Norris Wright officiating. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
His family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
