Herman enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Lee Edwards High School (now Asheville High). He saw active combat duty in the South Pacific during World War II and remained in the Marines until full retirement (including reserve duty) in 1972. After a brief time managing an Episcopal conference center in south Georgia, he returned to his home town of Asheville, NC and began his second long career, this time in hospital management at St. Joseph and Memorial Mission Hospitals. During his final years, he split his time between the mountains and the sea, enjoying his winter months at St. Simon's Island, GA.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Redeemer in Woodfin, NC. A private burial for the remains of both Herman and Jane will occur at a date and time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers or other memorials, please consider a donation to the Church of the Redeemer, 1201 Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC, 28804.
