Charles "Chuck" Wayne Swiger, 55, died Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at the Hospice Solace Center after a brave battle with cancer. A lifelong native of Buncombe County, Chuck was born June 24, 1962 to his late parents, Wayne Marion and Evelyn Peterson Swiger. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Chuck was a graduate of Asheville High School where he was on the varsity football and baseball teams. He enjoyed driving race cars on the Asheville Speedway, Kingsport, Newport and other area tracks. He was sponsored by friends this summer to try the "big track" at Charlotte Motor Speedway where he drove at over 150 miles per hour. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and poker night with his friends.
Chuck has been employed for many years by United Rentals delivering and returning construction equipment rentals. He recently won national Driver of The Year by this company and was awarded the issuance of a new truck with his name on it. Chuck, for the past 18 years, has also held a part time job on weekends and holidays with Ingles where he delivered groceries to their stores throughout a 4-state region.
Chuck is survived by his daughter, Stacy Griffin; his best friend of 17 years, Greg Stephens; former wife Cheryl Swiger; Betty Mull, who he considered his "mom"; and many loving friends and family.
A funeral service will be held at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Reverend Jeff Moore will officiate with burial to follow in Green Hills Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
