Richard E. "Gene" Cowan, 89, was promoted to Heaven on November 7, 2017. Born on August 6, 1928, in Webster, NC, he was the last survivor of his parents, R.T. and Bonnie McConnell Cowan.
Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. After his time in the service, he worked for the Air Force at the Air Weather Service in Asheville as a computer programmer, later transferring to the U.S. Post Office where he retired after 36 years of service.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 49 years, Virginia Jacobs Cowan. Surviving are his sons, Tom Cowan (Elaine), of Asheville, Doug Cowan (Suzanne), of Marietta, GA; and his granddaughter, Hope Cowan, of Wilmington, NC.
Richard was a member of Blackmer Masonic Lodge in Weaverville and a Scottish Rite Mason.
He was honored and blessed to serve his Lord and Savior as a member of First Presbyterian Church in Weaverville, doing the Lord's work there with loving Christian brothers and sisters dedicated to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 10, at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville, led by Pastor Skip Gillikin and Rev. Al Harrell.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials in memory of Richard be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
