Obituary

LeRoy Charles Saylor, PhD, 86, died Monday, April 2, 2018.

A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dr. Saylor was a son of the late Roy and Alma Rinderknecht Saylor. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War where he flew on the B-36 bomber.

Dr. Saylor earned his PhD in Genetics from NC State University, where he served as Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Professor in the School of Forest Resources. While living in Raleigh he also owned and operated one of Raleigh's first wine stores, The Wine Merchant.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Graham Saylor; daughters, Christi Lorenz (Kevin) and Jennifer Kyzer (Tom); son, Kurt Saylor; grandchildren, Anna Lorenz Ridgeway (Patrick), Rachel Lorenz Dickey (Austin), Dr. Brittany Kyzer, and Zachary Kyzer; 4 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ronald Saylor (Lucie).

Memorial services for Dr. Saylor will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael McFarland and the Rev. Walter Volz officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Lutheran School, 51 Wilburn Pl., Asheville, NC 28806, or to the charity of your choice.
