Wilma Sluder Sharpe, 95, passed away Sunday, May 6th, 2018, surrounded by her family. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Sharpe; her older daughter, Judy Sharpe Cogdill; her parents, Leet and Bertha Sluder; and her brothers, James and Donald Sluder.
Wilma was a lifelong resident of the Leicester area and a graduate of West Buncombe High School. She was a true 'country girl' at heart and enjoyed working in her vegetable garden until her health forced her to quit. Wilma was a hard worker her entire life and was not afraid to tackle any challenge. She had a quick wit, was a great 'country' cook, and really enjoyed being with her family.
She was a lifelong Carolina Tar Heel basketball fan and enjoyed bowling, word search books, playing bingo and playing the slot machines at various casinos. She also enjoyed her time volunteering and running the concessions at the VFW post on Leicester Highway, of which she was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was a special, 'feisty' lady and will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.
Wilma is survived by daughter, Joyce Clark (Eddie); sons, Larry Sharpe (Linda) and Jeff Sharpe; and daughter, Lisa Sharpe; grandchildren, Angie Cogdill Smith (Bobby), Keith Cogdill (Brandy), Eddie Clark, Jr., Karen Clark Redmon (Dean), Ashley Sharpe, and Allyson Sharpe Barnes (Matt); great-grandchildren, Derek Lamb, and Jake and Anna Clark; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018, in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, with family members serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday.
The family would like to thank the staff at Stone Creek Assisted Living and CarePartners Hospice Solace Center for their loving care and support of Wilma during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CarePartners Hospice Solace Center, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, in memory of Wilma Sharpe.
