Bailey Z. Whitt, 82, of 842 Sand Hill Road, Asheville, died Thursday, July 15, 2004. Mr. Whitt was born in Madison County and was a son of the late Zeb and Byrdie Foster Whitt. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Allon Whitt. He served in the Army Air Corps during WW II and was the owner and operator of OK Tires and OK Auto Sales in Candler. He was a former president of the Candler Business Association and in 1968 was named Candler Businessman of the year. He was an active member of Land of the Sky Shrine Club, a Mason and a member of Hominy Lodge #491. He was also a member of Acton United Methodist Church. Mr. Whitt was a servant of the Candler community and was instrumental in establishing the Hominy Valley Recreation Park which he continued to support through the years. Surviving are his wife, Frances Allison Whitt; two daughters, Candy Whitt of Arden and Linda Jorgensen of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a son, Bruce Whitt and his wife Phyllis of Candler; seven grandchildren, Roman Young, Christopher Young, Kelby Whitt, Marc Whitt, Courtney Jorgensen, Beau Whitt and Tiffany Ianucci; and a brother, Joe Whitt and his wife Bertha of Bat Cave. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Denham officiating and with Masonic Rites conducted by Hominy Lodge #491, A.F.&A.M. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Land of the Sky Shrine Club for the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, PO Box 24, Asheville, NC 28802.
