Marie Fullerton Freeman

Marie Fullerton Freeman, 72, of Candler, died on Saturday, November 26, 2016. A native of Wethersfield, CT, Marie was a daughter of the late Perley and Gladys Elizabeth Murray Fullerton. She is survived by her sons, Ty C. Freeman (Michelle), of Raleigh, and Jay E. Freeman (Freddy), of Greenwich, NY; sister, Lois Fullerton Shumaker (Bob) of Fair Oaks, CA; and former husband and dear friend of 50 years, Charles H. Freeman, of Asheville. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Marlee, Calleigh and Jayce. She graduated from Wethersfield High School in 1961. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Furman University in 1965. She completed her Master of Social Work at UNC at Chapel Hill in 1992. As a UNC alumni, Marie was a proud Tar Heel fan and also a lover of tennis. She retired in 2003 after 10 years as a social worker with Buncombe Co. Dept. of Social Services. Prior to Social Services, she worked three years with Blue Ridge Mental Health and eight years in teaching with Buncombe Co. Schools. Prior to her career of helping many children and families, Marie was a devoted homemaker & mother. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family. A reception and remembrance will be held there on Sunday December 4, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
