Herbert McKinley Cole, Sr, 92, of Arden, passed away Monday, May 26, 2025, at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
Born in Oakley, NC, he was the husband of Jean (Wagner) Cole of Arden, and the son of the late William McKinley and Eva (Miller) Cole. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Dale, Gene, and Joe Cole; and two sisters: Betty Sorrells and Ruth Calabrese.
Herb was a Marine veteran of the Korean War and was a member of Skyland Methodist Church.
He retired from CP Clare in 1998 after 58 years and then as an avid fisherman, spent quality time with his brother Mack in the streams in Cherokee. He loved taking his granddaughter, Megan, on fishing trips and showing her the ropes.
Herb loved his family, and a big family he had. He loved his children, granddaughter and 3 great-grandchildren wholeheartedly.
In addition to his wife of 68 years, Herb is survived by a son, Bert Cole (Sandy); a daughter, Leslie Barnes (Dennis); one granddaughter, Megan Cole Palmer (Jared); three great-grandchildren: Brycen, Callie, and Jase; two brothers: Mack and David Cole; three sisters: Monica Smith, Gloria Kennedy (Chuck), and Obera Currin; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 am Friday, May 30, 2025, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Candler.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elizabeth House, 581 S Allen Rd, Flat Rock, NC 28731 or to your favorite charity.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
