Robert Green “R.G.” Jackson, 94, of Candler, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the CarePartners Solace Center.

Born on December 27, 1930, in Thorn Hill, TN, he was the son of the late Fred and Sarah Stapleton Jackson. He was a proud Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He enjoyed a 35-year career with American Enka before retiring in 1986. He and his wife, Audrey, were longtime members of West Asheville Baptist Church.

In retirement, R.G. enjoyed golf, fishing, and gardening. He was an avid fan of University of Tennessee sports and Atlanta Braves baseball. He and Audrey enjoyed travel and spent many happy days exploring the Great Smoky Mountains and the Gulf Coast of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ova Faye Jackson and Ruby Johnson; son-in-law, Charles E. McKay, III; and a very special granddog, Barney.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Audrey Revis Jackson, and daughter, Tammy Jackson McKay, both of Candler; sister, Bernice Jackson Miller, of Johnson City, TN; nieces, Jane Mustain (Eric), of Johnson City, and Annis Evans (Stephen), of Blountville, TN; and two great-nieces.

His family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Groce Funeral Home, Patton Ave. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Tony Hooper will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will then take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to West Asheville Baptist Church, 926 Haywood Rd., Asheville, NC 28806, or to ABCCM, 1845 Brevard Rd., Arden, NC 28704.

  4. Dear Tammy,
Are you the Tammy who graduated from Erwin in 1977, if s, I was a classmate who lost contact with you all these years. Did you live in Tiny Farms back then? Anyway, my sympathy to you & your Mom. I know what it is like to lose a father. Mine passed in 2012 & he would have turned 100 last year. You were fortunate to have had your Dad this long & your Mom too. My mom passed in 2016 & my sister in 2023. I just wanted to send you & your Mom, my condolences. Send me an email sometime so we can catch up. Again my sympathy.

  5. I am so sorry to hear of RGs passing. Met him and Audrey in Sunday School. May show his grace and mercy to Audrey and d Tammy

  6. The passing of Robert Jackson, or “RG” as we knew him for 30-years, is the loss of a friend whose presence and wry sense of humor will be sorely missed. It is not just the passing of a good man, whose sense of humor, compassion, and commitment to “doing the right thing” was a way of life, but also because he is one less man who typified and lived the values of The Greatest Generation. His friends, family, the neighborhood, our community, and our country, have collectively suffered the loss of an irreplaceable man, and witnessed too, the inevitable diminishing of an era. “RG” was a really good man. The world is a better place because he was in it. Remembering him will aways bring a smile and a feeling of nostalgia. God’s speed, RG.
