verna shuler

June 5, 1943 ~ January 6, 2026

Born in: Sylva, North Carolina
Resided in: Fletcher, North Carolina

Verna Kay Popplewell Shuler passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 6, 2026.

Verna was born in Sylva, North Carolina on June 5, 1943 to the late Martha Emeline Cope of Jackson County, North Carolina and Joseph Beckham Popplewell of Russell County, Kentucky.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Tony Shuler, of Fletcher; her daughters Carla Shuler Hoffman (Grant) of Durham, NC; and Jennifer Shuler Hodges (George) of Asheville, NC; grandchildren Grayson Hoffman, Laurel Hoffman, Lincoln Hoffman, and Sawyer Hodges; her sister, Susie Cooper of Sylva, NC; and her niece, Michelle Cagle of Sylva, NC.

She graduated as valedictorian in the first graduating class from Sylva-Webster High School, class of 1961, before attending Mars Hill University in Mars Hill, NC. She majored in math and graduated with honors in the first graduating class after Mars Hill became a four-year institution, earning her degree in just three years.

After graduation she began her career in Washington, D.C. with the U.S. Patent Office and then the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory. After ten years in Washington she and Tony moved to Asheville and she continued her government career with NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center until she retired in 1999. While at NCDC she earned the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Award for Superior Federal Service.

In her lifetime, Verna was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart and they all loved spending time with their Nana. She had countless friends, new and old, including those from high school, her time in D.C., church, the Asheville Racquet Club, and the communities in which she lived. She loved gardening, planting flowers, taking pictures, being outdoors, listening to bluegrass, and spending time with friends and family. She especially loved playing tennis and being on the court with friends. Retirement also allowed time for travel with Tony in their RV which brought many new cross-country adventures.

Verna’s enthusiasm for life and interest in others made her a lifelong friend to many. Her smile and laughter were contagious and she brought joy to everyone who knew her. Her final days were marked by gratitude for the many blessings in her life.

The family will receive friends at a drop-in Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 17 from 2:00 – 4:30pm at The Barn at Tall Oaks, 28 Bradley Road in Hendersonville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina – Fund for WNC (cfwnc.org).

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Verna, I only knew you for a short while. But your love of people, pictures and tennis were made obvious to me. When you came and sat on our front porch, it seemed like I had known you for a long time. Then when we were leaving Haywood barbecue you hugged me and whispered, “I think you’re a keeper.” Showing off your new home and all the pictures you had put up, showed that you were happy there. I know you’re going to be missed. Love you!

  2. My deepest condolences. While I didn’t have a chance to know her well, I always enjoyed the pleasant conversations we had when I got to see her in Durham. Her enthusiasm cheering on the soccer sideline for a young Lincoln was quite enjoyable.

  3. Tony & Family
I am so sorry! I remember Verna in high school as such a sweet, friendly and smart girl. Then we were together at Mars Hill and she was the same friend. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days.

  4. Our deepest condolences and prayers to Tony, Carla, Jennifer and your families. From many conversations with Carla I know what a special woman Verna was. Prayers for all of you.

  5. Tony, I was so sorry to hear of Verna’s passing. She was such a sweetheart and a great southern lady. She welcomed me into the tennis group when I first joined ARC. I enjoyed playing tennis with both of you over the years.

  6. A beautiful, caring, and loving person was Verna Kay. She always had a smile and warm embrace for her friends and family.

  7. Tony and Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Verna’s passing. She was such a sweet person. Your family are in my prayers.

  8. Larry Cope’s entire family hated to learn of Verna Kay’s passing. My father (Larry) & Verna Kay are cousins and grew up playing together on Cope Creek. He was distressed over her death & hates that he cannot be there for visitation with you all! Laura, Lee, & I knew Verna Kay, but I’ll always remember her as dad’s childhood companion, an anchor to our Cope Creek family, and time with Aunt Martha & Uncle Joe! Love to you all. I pray that each of you find peace and joy in your own memories of Verna Kay.

  9. Verna was a lovely lady with a great smile. We will always remember her love for taking pictures at family events.

  10. Tony and Verna have been good friends for more than 20 years. We have played tennis, traveled, shared many meals, and laughs together. How many times have we heard “let me take one more” when Verna wanted another photograph.
We have many memories and an empty spot in our hearts. We miss you, Verna.

  11. Verna Kay Popplewell Shuler was a wonderful Christian Lady. She will be greatly missed by Family and Everyone who knew Her.
