Bill Columbus Howington of Asheville died February 8, 2026. He was born December 28, 1935, in Buncombe County, to the late Bud Howington and Bonnie Coffey Howington.

He enlisted in the Active Naval Reserve at the age of 17, during the Korean conflict, and served 8 years attaining the rank of Gunners Mate 2nd Class. He then re-enlisted in 1976 in the Naval Reserves Seabees as a Builder First Class where he served 4 years.

He was employed as a State Licensed Heating contractor for many years before starting his own cabinet and kitchen business. In 1980, he was employed with the State of North Carolina at ADATC where he became the maintenance director. He retired from there in 2001.

He played guitar and sang in a country band from 1972 to 1990.

He married the love of his life, Grace Lyda Howington, on July 17, 1954. He is survived by his wife of almost 72 years, Grace Lyda Howington; daughter Cheryl Kathleen (Kathy) Gannon of Asheville; and grandson John Matthew Gannon, who is on active duty in the United Staes Air Force in El Paso, Texas.
