Asheville – Malcolm Boyd McGuire, 30, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2007.
Born in Seattle, Washington, he grew up and resided in Asheville where he developed a great solace and joy for the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Malcolm attended St. Genevieve/Gibbons Hall, Carolina Day School, Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, North Carolina State University and later AB Tech in the EMT program. Among various opportunities of employment, Malcolm was at heart a real craftsman of woodturning. He was a member of the Civil War Society for the Historical Preservation of the 26th Regiment North Carolina Troops and took great pride in being a volunteer fireman for the Haw Creek Fire Department.
Malcolm was a very talented young man, a loving father, a dedicated husband, an affectionate son, a passionate brother, and a loyal friend to all he touched. We will always celebrate Malcolm’s individual spirit and everlasting kindness.
Preceded in death are his maternal grandparents, Joe Ann Withrow and Allan Booth McArdle.
Surviving are his daughter, Larisa Michelle McGuire; his son, Cullen O’Brien McGuire; his wife, Leslie Vadala McGuire; two brothers, John O’Brien McGuire, Jr. and Peter Buckley McGuire; his parents, Christine (Tina) McArdle and John O’Brien McGuire; his paternal grandparents, Grace Robinson and William Bulgin McGuire; aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 2:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. William A. Whisenhunt officiating. A reception in Tuton Hall will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haw Creek Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 9666, Asheville, NC 28815 or to the charity of your choice.
To John Jr.,
I am so sorry for your family’s loss. I remember Malcolm’s wonderful, unique woodworking skills — the many pens he carved for us to share with our clients. He truly touched so many people.
I hope you can have some comfort over time to remember the happy childhood memories you and Malcolm shared.
You are in my thoughts,
Emily

Dear Tina and John,
I was shocked and so saddened today to learn of Malcom’s death. It is so hard to come up with words. Beyond their childhood, our children were always an immediate topic of conversation whenever John or Tina and I encountered each other, or whenever we had a chance to catch up on what was going on in our lives. Few did more for their children or took more pride in them than you two. Malcom was part of our childrens’ family as they grew up and we are grieving with them for him, for you, for his family. What troubled times we live in. May God rest Malcom’s soul and may He provide you and his family some means of comfort in the days ahead.
With sincere sympathy,
Kent and Liz Salisbury
So very sorry to hear of your loss.
We had so hoped for a happy time at
Davidson with you soon however the loss of a child is hard to absorb. We still look forward to
renewed time together.
Love to everyone.

Dear McGuire family,
I remember Malcolm from when we rode in the same ‘north asheville’ carpool to CDS. What strikes me is that even as a kid Malcolm was very much his own person- funny, animated, and sweet. I am so sorry that he is gone, my thoughts are with you all.

Tina and John,
There is no greater loss than the loss of one’s child, regrdless of the age. Mac was the same age as our oldest Anne. I have read some wonderful things about him and wish I had known him. Please accept my sympathy in your loss and know that you are lifted up in prayer by me and many others.
Chris Hawk
Dr. McGuire and Family, I was distressed to read about your son. We just don’t expect our children to go before we do. You are in our thoughts and prayers. I remember well the first of three surgeries you performed on me and our discussing my moving to Charlotte when you were Manager of the Football Team at Myers Park coached by Gus Purcell whose wife Bonnie Thrash Purcell was in high school with me. Jeff Beaver, the star quarterback on the team was another Asheville Native. We talked about your Father being a Macon County Native and his leadership example as President of Duke Power for whom the McGuire Nuclear Plant is named. Your son had a great heritage and we just hope it helps to know others do care. Joe Clark
Thinking of all of you now and in the months to come.
