William Rex Smith, 68, of 59 Morning Star Dr., Leicester, died Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Memorial Campus Mission Hospitals. A native of Buncombe Co., he was a son of the late Robert “Bob” and Vegie Hipps Smith. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Aileen White, and brother, Neil Smith. Mr. Smith retired as a machine mechanic for Ball Brothers following 31 years of service. Mr. Smith was a US Army veteran. He was a member of the Asheville North Seventh Day Adventist Church. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Barbara Clark Smith; daughters, Tamara Barnette and husband, Tim, and their children, Brittany and Christopher, of Asheville, and Jennifer Kelly and husband Wes, and their twins, Jordan and Jarrett of Candler; sister, Revonda Haney, of Leicester; and brother, Glenn Smith, of Candler. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Asheville North Seventh Day Adventist Church with the Elder Will Oosthuizen officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Asheville North Seventh Day Adventist Church Building Fund, 364 Broadway, Asheville, NC 28801.

  1. Rex you were always a favorite part of our family to me. I am truly sorry that i wasn’t around. Barbara………I love you very much. You said something to me at my mothers funeral….i have been taking your advice and straighting up my life. My mother did love me very much.as she did our whole family.   3. I met Mr. Smith when my neighbor, Retha Sluder gave me his name when I needed some help with home maintenance.

    He was a very fine man — very skilled and through. What I remember most was the way he told about Jesus, his church and what God meant to him.

    May God comfort you during this time.

You always could answer all my questions we did share so much I wont forget you ever, Deb loved you so much I still hurt for her. Her last words to me I want to share with you. I already miss You

  8. Barbara, Tamara, & Jen, I am so sorry for your loss. Rex was such a wonderful man. I have so many fond memories as a teenager coming to your home and spending practically every weekend there. Barbara, you and Rex were like 2nd parents to me and you guys will always have a special place in my heart. Tamara, you will always be the ‘Bestest Friend’ I have ever had and Jen will always be the pesty little sis to me. You are all in my prayers. I love you all dearly. Kathy
