John Henry Ward, Sr., 93, of 392 Eliada Home Road, Asheville, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, at Mars Hill Retirement Community. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Ecton Washington and Anna Smith Ward. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Leila Livengood Ward, who died in 1992; two sisters, Helen Murray and Helena Teague; three brothers, Robert Ward, Walter Ward and Homer Ward and a son-in-law, Everette Young. Mr. Ward was a retired switchman for Southern Railway and was a member of the Railroad Trainmen and West Asheville Baptist Church. He loved watching sports and being with his grandchildren. Survivors include four daughters, Judy Buckner and husband Jim of Marshall, Vina Elkins and husband James of Hahira, GA, Priscilla Sheppard and husband Robert of Weaverville and Mary Young of Asheville; three sons, John H. Ward, Jr. and wife Beth of Asheville, James R. Ward and wife Mary of Enka and Joseph E. Ward, Sr and wife Debra of Asheville; twenty grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. His family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to John F. Keever Solace Center, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.

  4. I am so sorry for your loss of the father and grandfather that you all loved so much. I just wanted you to know that I was with him holding his hand and stroking his head as he died. I told him ‘God is waiting for you, your angels are here to take you to meet God. He died very peacefully. Again, my sincere condolences to you all.
