MAX G. CARLAND Max Gardner Carland, 69, of 22 Monte Vista Terrace, Candler, died Friday, October 31, 2000, at his home. Mr. Carland was a native of Buncombe County and was a son of the late John David and Nora Plemmons Carland. He was a 1947 graduate of Emma High School and was an associate with Groce Funeral Home for 20 years. He also formerly worked at Westinghouse, Inc., and most recently owned White Monument Works in Asheville. Mr. Carland was a member of the Cosmic Club and was instrumental in founding the Enka Marching Band Festival. He is survived by his wife, Nell Meadows Carland; a daughter, Patricia Patton and her husband Dan of Spartanburg, SC; a son, M. Richard Carland of Asheville; a sister, Maxine Crompton of Asheville; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday, November 3m 1997, in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Phillip E. Jenkins, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 2 - 4 pm Sunday at the funeral home and request memorials be made to Snow Hill United Methodist Church, 84 Snow Hill Church Road, Candler, NC 28715, or to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802.
