Edward G. Roberts, Jr., 90, of 171
School Road, Asheville, died
Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998 in an
Asheville hospital.
A native of Buncombe County, he
was a son of the late Mary Sams
Roberts and Edward Gallatin
Roberts, Sr., a former mayor of
Asheville. He was preceded in
death by his first wife, LaRue
Kennedy Roberts, who died in 1978
and a daughter, Beryl Roberts
Johnston Watson, in 1987.
Mr. Roberts was a graduate of
Asheville High School and attended
the University of New Mexico and
was an active member of Malvern
Hills Presbyterian Church. He was
a former Deputy U.S. Marshal,
retiring in 1970 with 28 years
service. He then became an
Assistant Clerk of Superior Court in
Buncombe County, serving until
1978.
He is survived by his wife, Lura
McCracken Roberts; a sister,
Margaret Roberts Schell of
Asheville; six grandchildren and
thirteen great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 am Friday in
the Malvern Hills Presbyterian
Church conducted by Rev. Bill Clark
and Dr. John Newton. Interment will
follow in Green Hills Cemetery. The
family will receive friends for one
hour prior to the service at the
church.
Memorials may be made to the
Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church, 2
Bear Creek Road, Asheville, NC
28806 or to the Presbyterian Home
for Children, 80 Lake Eden Road,
Black Mountain, NC 28711.
Mr. Roberts will remain at Groce
Funeral Home until placed in the
church one hour prior to the service.
