James “Jim” Wesley Carland, Sr., 83, of Candler, died Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville. He was a native of Buncombe County and was a son of the late Joseph Wesley and Annie Mae Emory Carland. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Callie Aaron Carland who died in 1975. He was the owner of Carland Body Shop in Skyland and was a US Army Veteran, serving during WWII. He is survived by two daughters, Annette C. Stone and her husband, Brett, of Harper’s Ferry, WV and Susan C. McDaris of Candler; one son, Dr. James W. Carland, Jr. and his wife, Dr. JoAnn C. Carland, of Cullowhee; six grandchildren, Trey and Jason Carland of Candler, Tamara Jackson of Asheville, Krystal Drake of Ft. Drum, NY, Spec. Joshua Stone of Ft. Drum, NY and James Stone of Harper’s Ferry, WV as well as four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Friday, February 19, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Carland Foundation for Learning, which will establish a scholarship fund in Jim’s memory, PO Box 2689, Cullowhee, NC 28723 or www.carlandfoundation.org.

  3. To the Carland family,

    I just wanted you all to know that over the many years I never forgot you all or your dad. I remember all the times when I was younger I got to come over to your home and visit Suzanne and both your parents were so nice. Your dad’s name came up so many times in our home- often it was because of an automotive repair or trading something- and I remember that the very first time I was ever allowed to talk on a CB it was to your dad. I will never forget it.

    I know you all have so many more good memories. He was a good man.

Your father was a fine person he always so good to me when you grandmother was a live I would go by ever night and check on them and ever after she pass away I would still go by because I wanted to know Jim was ok. He will be miss but he is in a better place up their with his family and telling some of his story We will keep you all in or prays and if we can do any thang just give us a call God bless you all Linda & Herbert
