Vernon Howard Crook, 67,of 19 Oak Court, Pisgah Estates, Candler, died Monday, February 7, 2000, at his home.

A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Charlie Henry and Bessie Mae King Crook. He was retired after 23 years of service in the US Navy, having served active duty in four foreign countries and two foreign wars. Between himself and two brothers a total of 73 years active duty was served.

He was a member of Oak Forest Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent.

He was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Eplee Crook; three sons, James Vernon Crook and Thomas Christopher Crook of Hendersonville and Michael Edwin Crook of Asheville; two grandchildren, Alexandria Michelle Crook and Michael Riley Crook; a sister, Margaret Crook Fortune of Asheville and a brother, Leonard Corbitt Crook of Asheville.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles Henry Crook, Jr., Albert Harding Crook, Donald Bernice Hamilton Crook, George Ray Crook, and Billy Earl Crook.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday at Oak Forest Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Barry Lambert officiating. Full military rites will be provided by the Asheville High School Marine Corps JROTC unit in the church cemetery.

Mr. Crook will remain at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue until being taken to the church Thursday morning where his family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 am.
