John Hamlyn Gayle, Jr., 62, of 14 Hubbard Street, Asheville, died Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at his residence.

A native of Manning, SC, he was a son of John H. and Emily Mathis Gayle of Sevierville, TN. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Gayle and a son, William Chitwood. He was the owner/operator of Spartan Distributors and an active member of the YMCA.

Other survivors include his wife, Alice Potter Gayle; three sons, John H. Gayle, III of Orlando, Andy W. Gayle of Myrtle Beach and Jeff S. Quintana of Panama City; two daughters, Alice J. Cox of Wellford, SC and Tania L. Gayle of Asheville; two brothers, James Lee Gayle of East Meadow, NY and Stephen Wayne Gayle of Orlando; a sister Janice Fox of Sevierville; ten grandchildren, Sarah Anderson, Hayley Quintana, Jessica Quintana, Cody Cox, Jonathan Cox, Mason Delude, Payton Delude, Jared Delude, Laurin Gayle and Andrew Gayle.

A memorial service will be 10:00 am Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend Tom Gable officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

  2. John was my husband for 17 years, we had four children, Loretta, John, Andrew, and Tania. I hope to see him one day in heaven. We never stopped loving each other even after divorcing.
