Resided in: Asheville, North Carolina

Adele Hathaway Moyer Kenny passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 5, 2024. She was known as Mimi to friends, family, and especially her beloved grandchildren. Adele was born on August 10, 1936 and raised in Rochester, New York where she attended Charlotte High School. She met the love of her life and husband of 69 years John Richard Kenny while working at Eastman Kodak Company in upstate New York. Adele and John were married in 1955 and moved to Asheville, NC in 1964 where they raised their three sons. Adele was a very involved stay-at-home wife and mother through the elementary school years. She later worked as a receptionist at a local dental office and then as a guidance office receptionist at TC Roberson High School.

Adele was a passionate fan of many sports, but particularly basketball at UNC where all three sons attended college. She was a long time active member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher, NC and later of All Saints Anglican Church in Mills River, NC. Her quiet steadfast faith was evidenced by her Altar Guild ministry and loyal membership in the Order of the Daughters of the King. She enjoyed a variety of activities through the years including travel, cooking, sewing, knitting, needlepoint, reading, genealogy research, scrapbooking, playing bridge, spending time with friends and family, and caring for her beloved pet cats.

Adele was preceded in death by her parents, father Harley Adair Moyer, and mother Adele Dickenson MacMillan Moyer, her sister-in-law Marilyn Thomsen Moyer, and her brother-in-law Robert J. Steidle. She is survived by her husband John Richard Kenny, her brother Don Moyer, her sister-in-law Linda Steidle, her three sons Eric Kenny (Karen), Alan Kenny (Rita), and Steve Kenny (Amanda Aldridge), her six grandchildren Kristen Bonner (nee Kenny- Cole), Margaret Osborne (nee Kenny- Brant), Michael Kenny, Erin Smith (nee Kenny- Cameron), Mollie Kenny, and John Kenny, and her four great grandchildren Finley Bonner, Sienna Bonner, Scout Bonner, and Ione Osborne.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Givens Estates Health Center and Four Seasons Hospice for the loving care always shown to Adele. In lieu of flowers, please direct any memorial donations to TC Roberson Partners in Education Graduates of Distinction, TC Roberson High School, 250 Overlook Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

    • Adele Kenny (Known by her immediate family as Mimi) was 4 years younger than me Don)herbrother. I loved her as a brother but being 4 years older, we traveled in different circles of friends. When she moved to NC the only time we saw each other and our families was at family gatherings. The result was a loving and distant relationship.

  5. She was the kindest most sweetest person I ever met. She encouraged my goal to go into the military and was the person that I first returned too see after doing such. May She rest in peace 🙏, her Angelic work now complete on this earth…

  6. My sincere sympathies to the family. I admired Adele in so many ways. She will be missed.

  7. To My Dearest Cousins – My heart breaks for all of you. Your Mom was one of those people that just radiated warmth, peace and comfort. I think back on our summer visits to Asheville and smile. I can still perfectly hear her voice when she would pretend to be shocked at something Uncle Dick would say and she would instantly say – “John Richard Kenny!” in her best imitation of an outraged voice but always with a smile on her face. That smile that would light up a room. Words can not express the grief our family feels at her passing. Please extend our deepest sympathy to your families and may you always keep her memory close.
