Bertha Davis McHenry

Bertha Davis McHenry, 94, of 1743 Pisgah Highway in Candler, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on August 6, 2008. A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Emanuel and Phebe Burris Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jesse J. McHenry; two sons, James Dewey Pressley and Elijah Burgin Pressley, Jr; five brothers, James, Hoy, Branson, Bill and Howard Davis; three sisters, Geneva Davis Pressley, Opal Davis Rutherford and Margaret Davis Anderson; one son-in-law, Henry Green and one great-granddaughter, Suzanne Johnson. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church of which she attended regularly. She had been a member of Upper Hominy Fire Department Auxilary for several years. She was an avid reader and loved children. Survivors include her daughter, Ruby Pressley Green of the home; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Warren Pressley of Kernersville; one sister, Alida Davis Fisher of Asheville; one sister-in-law, Maddie Jones Davis of Candler; seven grandchildren, Sharon Hogensmith and her husband Mike of Murfreesboro, TN, Marilyn Green of the home, Brenda Simmons and her husband Tommy of Walkertown, William "Bill" Pressley of Candler, Rebecca Taylor and her husband Don of Candler, Sara Howell and her husband Glenn of Candler and Carleen Green of the home; ten great-grandchildren, Timothy Johnson, Elizabeth and Donnie Taylor, Heather Malpass, Michael and Megan Simmons, Mark, Daniel, Michael and Rachel Lambert; nine great-great-grandchildren, Brittany, Taylor, and Tori Trull, Andrew and Harmony Taylor, Landan Malpass, Josh, Maddy and Faith Lambert; several nieces and nephews and a very special buddy, Little Sarah Marlor. The funeral service will be 11:00 am Saturday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Winebarger and Allen Winebarger officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Bill Pressley, Donnie Taylor, Michael Simmons, Don Taylor, Butch Howell and David Winebarger serving as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers will be Wayne Suddreth, Charles Davis, Charles Penland, Paul Henry Davis, Edward Pressley and Donald Pressley. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 pm Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
