Mrs. Betty Israel passed away on July 17, 2022. She was born in 1928 and was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and a member of the United Methodist Church since childhood.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert, her son, Douglas, a brother, Durl, and her parents, Don and Canty O’Kelley.
She leaves behind her sons, Larry (Elise) and Rodney (Claire); grandchildren, Kyle, Shea, Lisa, Kelly, Jessie and Sarah; and nine wonderful great-grandchildren.
Betty was a graduate of Candler High School and of Cecil’s Business College. She worked for both the Buncombe County and Asheville City Schools, retiring in 1984.
Betty wrote her memoir, Piney Mountain Remembered, Memories of a Childhood, 1928-1947 and it is archived and copies available at the Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society library.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, July 24 at 3:00 p.m. at Piney Mountain Methodist Church.
Flowers are welcome, or memorials may be made in Betty’s memory to the charity of your choice.
