Blanche Embler Starnes, 103, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Aston Park Health Care Center.
Blanche was a daughter of the late David Clarence and Josephine Vess Embler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Starnes, who died in 2003; her sisters, Irene Tallevast and Phyllis Queen and her brothers, James Embler, David C. Embler, Jr., and William J. Embler.
A McDowell Co. native, Blanche spent her infancy, childhood and early teen years in Winston-Salem before moving to Spring Lake, NJ. She received her education in the schools of Winston-Salem and Ocean Grove, NJ, and the Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, where she majored in church music.
She lived her adult life in Asheville, where she served as Minister of Music at Calvary Baptist Church for 13 years. During her time at Calvary, she met and married Baptist layman and choir soloist, Glenn Starnes and they enjoyed 66 years of marriage, during which her husband was always supportive of her work. She later joined the staff of Grace Baptist Church, where she served as Minister of Music for 32 years before retiring on December 31, 1979. The members of Grace Church conferred the title "Minister of Music Emeritus" upon her in 1989.
She was active in the Asheville Music Club and served as counselor to the Etta Handte Blanchard Junior Music Club in the early days of both organizations. Always involved in church music in the Buncombe Baptist Association, she was the organizer and coordinator of Messiah presentations for many years. On the state level, she served as Secretary-Treasurer of the North Carolina Baptist Ministers of Music Conference and as guest conductor and clinician for seven seasons at the Caswell Assembly Music Week, Fort Caswell, NC.
An activist for children's choirs, she pioneered in the Graded Choir Program for Baptist Churches in North Carolina. Also, as an ardent promoter of the complete church choir program she worked diligently in all age groups, preschool through adult. She believed in better church music through a trained and dedicated leadership. The theme of her ministry was "Church music to the Glory of God and to proclaiming the Gospel of Christ's Redeeming Grace."
Mrs. Starnes is survived by her daughter, Terrie Starnes Groce and husband H. Dale Groce, of Asheville; granddaughter, Mary Kristina Groce Brown and husband Ben, of Lawrenceville, GA; great-grandson, William Dale Brown, of Lawrenceville; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service and celebration of Mrs. Starnes' life will be held at Grace Baptist Church on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. J. Derrill Smith officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Her family will be forever grateful to her church family and friends for their love and visits. They also acknowledge with gratitude the kind and compassionate care provided by the wonderful team at Aston Park Health Care Center. Their attentive assistance eased her final years.
Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 718 Haywood Rd., Asheville, NC 28806 or to the Aston Park Employee Appreciation Fund, 380 Brevard Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
I know there is rejoicing in heaven as Mrs Starnes arrives to lead the heavenly choirs! How very blessed I am to of known her during my years at Grace and beyond. She was a testimony to God with her singing even at 103! Praise be to God that His faithful servant is at home!
May God’s peace surround you, Terrie, and family as you celebrate her life.
I remember with great fondness Blanche Starnes. Always the professional and yet also a loving, caring person to help you out. I sung in the Messiah many times (that has been years ago) and remember her as an ardent believer in doing that music ‘right,’ and to the Glory of God. Looking forward to singing in the heavenly choir with her. Peace and comfort to her family. Priscilla Rice Morgan
I always looked forward to our youth choir trips. I will always cherish the memories from being under Mrs. Starnes influence. I can see her organizing a Grace Church choir in heaven. I know my Mother & Dad will be there.
I can imagine her directing the choir in heaven…Cherish the memories.
What a blessing it was to have Blanche a part of your life. Debbie and Janet joined her choir at the age of three, stayed until they became adults. Buster joined her choir and was part of it for many years. She always called Buster by his real name Oliver. We all loved her so much! Our prayers and love we send to the family. Oliver and Judy!
She was a beautiful and accomplished lady.
My deepest sympathies on the passing of an amazing lady! I have awesome memories of her! God Bless to all of you & especially Terrie Starnes Groce & family! You’re all in my prayers!
Terrie, my sincere condolences in the loss of your Mother. Growing up in Grace Baptist Church, I always enjoyed being in her youth choir. She was the one who first introduced me to a metronome & I remember being so intrigued by it. Mrs. Starnes was such a kind, compassionate person with a beautiful smile and she will always be a wonderful memory of my childhood. Sending prayers of comfort for all the family.
Blanche is a permanent part of our hearts. Always a smile. Always a praise. Always singing of God’s love and goodness. Even though she’s been unable to attend church, I still prepare for her ears. Thinking of you and her church family during this time.
We extend sincere condolences to you and your family. I know Mrs. Starnes will be missed.
Terrie and Dale, so sorry to hear of Mrs. Starne’s passing. What a full life she lived! We are thinking of you all.
I’m sorry not to be in NC to attend the memorial service, but I send my love.
Try as they might , neither Mrs. Starnes nor Rachel could succeed in getting me to sing on key! Still, through Grace choirs I gained a love and appreciation for music . Many of my childhood memories center around church choir practices and events.
Mrs. Starnes was such an inspirational example to those of us who became educators; it was apparent she loved her subject and each of her students. She was a lady of dignity and poise, yet full of spunk! Grace kids were very blessed!
What a talented, beautiful and accomplished woman! I will cherish my memories of her as our choir director always! She sought out the best from all of us
Such a lovely and gracious lady. God bless her family.
Mrs. Starnes was truly the most inspirational person for me musically. I will eternally be grateful for her influence and thankful to the Lord for His providential plan in placing me under her tutelage. Her graceful, dignified presence commanded respect, while ultimately honoring Holy God. Although Mrs. Starnes was an accomplished musician, she did not place herself in a forefront position as lead soloist or keyboardist. Mrs. Starnes enveloped a much larger purpose by encouraging many adults and children to express their musical love for Christ. Only heaven knows the number of musical seeds she planted and cultivated and how far reaching her ministry will ultimately go. Mrs. Starnes heard God’s call for her life. She never quit conducting a hymn and worshipfully praising her God. Thank you, Lord, for allowing my life to be influenced by Mrs. Blanche Starnes. To God be all the glory!
Dale and Terri, Sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
What a wonderful lady and a wonderful life.
Love, hugs and prayers to you all.
Love, Janet Israel Strickland and family
