Callie Tipton Ammons Shaft, 90, of 11 Hartshorn Drive, Candler, died Wednesday, September 8, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital. Mrs. Shaft was born in Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late John and Almedia Blankenship Tipton. She was married to Charles Ammons who died in 1971 and to Albert Shaft who died in 1997. She was a retired floral designer and was a member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church. She is survived by several nieces and nephews including Bill and Joann Faulkner of Asheville. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Reeves Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Sams officiating.

  2. Callie was my baby sitter a few years ago, when I was a young lad of two or so and she was about ten. Callie, her twin sister Allie, sisters Alice and Lily, brothers Charlie and Johnny – were the children of John Tipton (my mother’s brother) and Almedia Blankenship,(my father’s sister) – making them my ‘double first cousins’. I believe the geneticists say that would make us more closely related than brothers and sisters. Now that Callie has departed, I guess I am the last remaining one of our generation of these families ! !
