Fletcher ~ Captain George H. Seymour, USN (Retired), 91, of Fletcher passed away Friday, May 18, 2012 at Universal Healthcare. Captain Seymour was born in Chicago, Illinois and he attended the University of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia Wolfe Seymour. George devoted 27 years of active duty in the U.S. military and then an additional 14 years with the Defense Department providing exceptional public service in dedication to our country. In his 27 years in the Navy, Captain Seymour was active duty during World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam Wars. The 14 years that he spent in the Department of Defense, he represented the Director of Defense Research and Engineering in providing most effective liaison with the Senate Appropriations Committee, as well as the Senate Armed Services Committee, and the same two committees of the House. Captain Seymour developed and maintained close, personal working relationships with members of these committees and their staffs, to insure that they were fully informed on all the details of the annual Defense budget; and that key defense witnesses were thoroughly informed on what was expected of them when they appeared before these committees to explain and justify the Defense budget, and later to respond effectively to congressional questions and requests for data that usually followed. Captain Seymour, on numerous occasions, extended himself to insure that the interests of the Defense Department were well served. He suggested, arranged, and personally participated in important visits by committee members and staff to key military commands, to major defense contractors, and to our NATO allies to provide us with the current knowledge required to fully understand and support the Defense budget. His insight into congressional matters, his sensitivity to congressional needs, and his experienced knowledge of the broad range of major weapon system developments, enabled him to provide invaluable advice and assistance to the Director of Defense Research and Engineering, and to the Directors of the various Defense agencies, to obtain favorable congressional action over the years, on the Defense budget. Captain Seymour is survived by his only daughter, Pat Eschbacher and her husband, Jim. Pat and Jim would like to express their deepest gratitude toward all of those involved in George's care over the last few years such as the Universal Healthcare Staff and Dr. Hamilton and Sherry; Jenny Spears, RN; Chaplain Bobi Exline; Kelly Caudle, social worker representing Four Seasons Hospice; the VA Hospital, the Skyland Fire Department and special friends, Glenda Carver and Jeremy. No local services are planned, but Captain Seymour and his wife's cremated remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington.
