Carol Moore Parker, 74, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the CarePartners Solace Center.

A native of Asheville, Carol was a daughter of the late Harold and Mary Curtis Moore.

Carol was a graduate of Owen High School, and Berea College in Kentucky, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She then earned a master’s degree at the University of South Carolina. Carol formerly taught at Georgia State University, Berea College, Western Carolina University, and at AB-Tech. She returned to patient care in 1983. She worked for St. Joseph/Mission Hospitals, and was instrumental in the beginning of the Wound Care Center.

She was a charter member of Eta Psi, National Honor Society of Nursing, recipient of the Excellence in Nursing Award presented by WNC chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, an international Nursing honor society, Med-Surgical Nurse of the year, Chairman of The NC Joint Practice Committee, member of the NCNA task force revision of the Nurse Practice Act, founding board member of Mountain Area Hospice, recipient of the Whitlock-Lees award from the American Cancer Society, Nurse of the Year, 1992 St Joseph’s for her work in Enterostomal Therapy, member of the Great 100 Nurses in NC, and former leader of The Candlelighters for parents who have children with Cancer. She was also a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church and had been given an Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women.

Surviving are her husband, Tom Parker; daughter, Renee Parker Skiles (Tom) of Denver, NC; grandchildren, Amanda, Lauren, and Tommy; sister, Margaret M. Rusher (Ed); brother, Robert Moore (Sue); and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with the Rev. Kim Wells and Rev. Anne Morgan officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Special thanks to Heather Moore, beloved niece, for her love and devotion during her illness; all the many friends and church family who facilitated her move back to her beloved mountains; and to the entire staff at CarePartners Hospice Solace.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope Presbyterian Church, 3070 Sweeten Creek Rd., Asheville, NC 28803.

The loss of Carol is the loss of a truly great lady, a fun friend to be around both personally and intellectually, your soulmate and a nursing mentor to Denese for so many years. We loved her and will miss her as we pray for continued strength for you.

  4. It was an honor to know her. Unfortunately, we will be unable to attend her service as Bruce is having surgery the day before.

  5. I’ve loved this woman a long time. We were in church work together and had so much fun. I visited her school of nursing in Brea and sent her some pictures of the new facility, she loved it. We nurses never forget those days. I’m glad she is at peace now and I want to send a big hug to Tom, the best husband in the world!!!

    My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. Carol was an amazing woman, nurse, and mentor. She was always kind and compassionate. She loved to help others grow and develop. She was the epitome of a professional nurse. I was fortunate to talk with her by phone several months ago and catch up after all these years. Sending blessings of peace and grace.

  10. Carol will be missed for her knowledge and expertise in the treatment of wounds and Enterostomal therapy! If you were ever unsure of what to do, you called Carol! I enjoyed working along side her for several years! I know she will be missed in her family and friends also! Carol will always be a very special person and nurse!

  12. I didn’t know she was sick, would have loved to speak with her, she was the consummate teacher as well as provider of meticulous nursing care. She taught at my nursing school, Ga State, after I’d already graduated. But she became friends with my darling Aunt Memi, also a professor there and made the connection right away! She always remembered her to me, Carol was thoughtful like that, and I will always remember her brilliance and kindness! Rest in peace dear Carol, may flights of Angels sing you to your rest…

  16. Carol was a good classmate and friend while at Owen together. Tony and Anne were in her class. I knew her as a peer while nursing at St. Joseph’s and the Mission Health. She was always a lady in appearance and demeanor. I admired her! I didn’t know she was sick and am sorry to have missed her in these final days.

    Carol and I worked together for many years at SJ/Mission plus she was a great help with my Dad’s care. Just an awesome nurse, teacher and such a caring person. She certainly gave to all she came in contact with and set a high standard for those of us privileged to know and work with her.

    I worked with Carol when she worked in wound care and later she cared for my mother in-law and father in-law. She always had a smile on her face and sweet words of encouragement! The care and dignity she showed to my in-laws will never be remembered very fondly. Gone too soon but never forgotten!

  27. I knew Carol first at Berea College School of Nursing; after I graduated, I had the pleasure of being one of Carol’s instructors in her senior year. Several years later, I took a class at MAHEC and Carol was my instructor. I saw her frequently in her work at St. Joseph and the Wound Care Center. She was truly a shining light every time you saw her. She was a beautiful person and treated her patients with love and a great sense of dignity and caring. I pray that the memories you made with her will sustain you in the coming days

  32. Carol and I were classmates at Berea and roommates in Louisville, KY for our first job after graduation.
    She was a true friend, the kind you didn’t see or even talk to often but knew would be there for you when you needed her wisdom and love. Thank you Tom for loving and caring for her. And thanks for bringing her back to her beloved mountains. We will miss her.
