Caroline Luby Phelps

caroline phelps
Caroline "Punch" Luby Phelps, born September 2, 1915, daughter of Dr. Daniel F. Luby and Gertrude L. Luby, died peacefully at her home in Fairview on December 11, 2008. Her daughters, Linda P. Schenck and Lyssa P. Cross and friend, Mary K. Kautz were with her and surrounded her with comfort and love. She was 93 and had survived her husband, Sid, by six years. She is survived by five children, Dan Phelps of Redding, PA, Linda P. Schenck of Pine Ridge, FL, Sidney "Prent" Phelps of Midlothian, VA, Lyssa P. Cross of Fairview and Fred M. Phelps of Norwich, CT; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was born and grew up in Syracuse, NY and attended both the Goodyear School and the Madeira School. She went to Bennett College and then to Smith College from which she graduated in 1937. She married Sidney Rolland Phelps in 1939. She was a "beautiful and elegant lady" with a marvelous sense of humor and a great drive to always make things just right! They moved to Cazenovia, NY in 1947. Punch was constantly on the move, with social graces and a wonderful artistic ability. She opened "The Little Book Case", a ladies clothing shop and ran it for nearly 30 years. In 1976, they retired to Tryon, where they resided until 1997, at which time they built their first and only new house in Fairview, down the road from Lyssa, where they lived until their deaths. She and Sid had a lasting and true love for 63 years. Now they are dancing together forever.
