With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, sister, and friend, Carolyn Cavan Dalton, daughter of the late Hunter Davie Cavan and Martha Jean Everett Cavan. After a brief illness, she passed away peacefully at the age of 84, at her son’s home on December 22, 2025, her son and daughter-in-law were present at her passing.
Born July 2, 1941, in Greensboro, NC, Carolyn Cavan Dalton graduated from Greensboro High School in 1959, where she excelled in athletics and was active in the Girl Scouts of America. She earned her teaching certificate from Western Carolina University in 1960 and began her career at Lovell Elementary School in Apopka, FL. In 1970, she and her husband, Ronald L. Dalton, returned to Western North Carolina to serve as educators in their community. Carolyn later worked at Venable Elementary School and Sand-Hill Venable Elementary School, retiring in 1998 as assistant P.E. teacher.
After retirement, Mr. & Mrs. Dalton enjoyed many years of traveling with their closest friends and lots of golf.
After the passing of her husband, Carolyn Cavan Dalton moved to Simpsonville, SC to reside with her son and daughter-in-law.
Carolyn is survived by her son, Thomas Dalton, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Brooks Dalton; brother and sister-in-law, William Lee & Ann Dalton of Asheville; sister-in-law, Phyllis Cavan of South Hill, Virginia; her nieces and nephew, Tammie, Kim, Russell, Bradley, and William; great nephew, Hunter Tucker of Greensboro, NC; and her dearest friends, Grace, Joie, Fran, Zeata, and Nancy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ronald L. Dalton, and her beloved brother, Hunter Davie Cavan.
Her hobbies included golf and travel, whenever health permitted, as well as playing cards, working puzzles, reading her Bible, snoozing with Dudley on her lap, and attending church. She was an avid sports fan, and every fall, she was faithful to her recliner and collegiate sports.
Her favorite Bible verses were Psalm 21st and 23rd.
A memorial service will be held Friday, January 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Patton Ave. chapel at Groce Funeral Home, Asheville, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Small but Mighty Dog Rescue of Campobello, SC, where she met her beloved dog, Dudley.
Her “fire-cracker” spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

What a blessing to have known Carolyn through all these years. She was a blessing to many people that knew her. She was a positive role model in her school jobs, community, church and with her family and friends. She will be missed.
