The Rev. Charles Q. Phillips, 88, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at his residence.

A native of Cowpens, SC, Rev. Phillips was a son of the late Walter and Eula Phillips. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Bolin Phillips, a grandson Camden Bailey and a brother, J.C. Phillips.

Rev. Phillips was a graduate of Carson-Newman College and Clark Memorial Junior College. He moved to Buncombe County and assumed the pastorate at Newfound Baptist Church in 1974, a position he held for 23 years. He then served Piney Mountain Baptist and Macedonia Baptist churches. Recently he had been attending Victory Baptist Church.

Charles Phillips’ personal mission statement was to pour His life into the lives of others with the purpose of sharing Jesus with everyone.

Rev. Phillips is survived by his daughters, Robin P. Hughes and husband Johnny, and Kristi P. Bailey and husband Chad; grandchildren, Charlie Hughes, Casey Hughes and his fiancee Mae, Hayden Bailey, Auburn Bailey, Brendan Bailey and Ian Bailey; sister Doreen Riley, brother Grady Phillips and his wife Ann, and special friend, Georgia Moore.

The funeral service for Rev. Phillips will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Newfound Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Hughes, Chad Ellege and Bradley Johnson officiating. Private interment will be in the church cemetery.

His family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice or to St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.

  3. What a wonderful man! He was a huge blessing to me as a teenager, and always a great friend to my family. I was not a member of his church but knew him through Kristi. Never I doubt in my mind that when I saw him and he told me that he loved me, that he truly meant that. Preacher I know you are celebrating in Heaven, loving on our Savior and hugging Mrs. Phillips, having the time of your life! Until we meet again!

  6. My sincere condolences on the passing of Pastor Phillips to his family and friends. He was such a faith-filled rock for my parents, Gay and Shirley Israel, and most recently he performed my dad’s funeral at Newfound. They considered him a friend and a blessing in their lives. He was an awesome man of God and I know he’s with Him today. Peace and comfort to those who go on without his daily presence. His life impacted many and memories of him will go on for a long time!

  8. Brother Charles will always have a special place in our heart. He visited our dad, witnessed to and prayed with him. Dad was saved at 85 years old.   11. What a precious and Godly man. He was always there for our family in good times and bad. He always thought of others before himself. It was such a privilege to have him conduct the funeral for both of my parents. Robin and Kristi, you are both in my prayers. It is such a comfort to know that you will see him again someday.   13. Charles Phillips is the most wonderful, genuinely loving and passionate man of God whom I’ve ever had the blessing to know. When I was young, I remember him as funny, fun loving and yet powerful in the pulpit. He unabashedly delivered the Word of God and the love of Christ in a way that was truly unique. I always made it a point to see him whenever I was in Leicester. He will be truly missed.

My husband was sick for many years and long after Charles was no longer the pastor at Newfound, he still made visits to my husband, and not only to him, but to my grandparents who were not even in his section of town. Charles was truly unique the last of the old fashion kind. We all loved him. So sorry for this great loss. Our loss and Heavens gain.

Charles visited my husband who was sick for many years long after he was no longer pastor of our church. Charles was truly a unique pastor and the last of the old fashion kind.   31. Charlie welcomed me to Buncombe County when I first began my ministry here as a “young man”. We both shared the same first name and both were born in Cowpens SC. Will miss his a big smile, a brother’s embrace, encouraging words, and lots of laughter. Charlie personified the passionate preacher of the Gospel and a faithful shepherd to Christ’s flock. Dear family, I am so sorry that I’m out of town and cannot be at his funeral. I am proud to have known him throughout the years as Friend.

  36. Preacher Phillips brought my husband Sam and I back to church. We loved him from the beginning,and he was family. His straight forward love and knowledge of the bible drew so many to GOD. He was lovingly called**LEICESTER, ASHEVILLE, ALEXANDER’S PREACHER. He will be a part of so many lives forever, and he will be smiling and welcoming all of us when we cross over to heaven. We wish comfort for his family as they now say goodbye for now but have plans to have a great reunion when we all meet again.

  43. Wow! I’d love to see the sights Charles is seeing now! What a wonderful pastor he was to my family. He baptized both my boys. We served together at many funerals and weddings over the years. I do want you, Kristi and Robin, to know we love you and will be lifting you up in prayer. Now I know it’s almost 4 1/2 months after his “going home”, but our sentiments are just as genuine.
