Msgt. Clinton Holliday (retired U.S. Army), 86, died Tuesday at the VA Hospital in Asheville after a period of declining health. He was a resident of Arden.
He was the son of the late Augustus and Elizabeth Evans Holliday of Union Point, Ga. He was preceded in death by brothers Claude, Allan, Gus, Clifford and sisters Ruby and Sally.
Msgt. Holliday, a career soldier, served during WW II and the Korean War. He was a paratrooper and saw combat in Europe. In Korea, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was on War Dead Escort after he returned to active duty. He served in Austria and Germany before attaining a teaching position at LaSalle Military Academy in New York where he worked until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Helga Prochnow Holliday, three children, Barbara Holliday (Evans) of Arden, Gale Holliday (Ballard) of Barnardsville, Steven Holliday of the home, grandchildren Cayta (Evans) Jordan of Cumming, Ga., Dylan Ballard of Barnardsville and several nieces and nephews in Georgia.
Private burial will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road is in charge of arrangements.
