Mr. Colman “Jack” Ramsey Gentry, 95, of Keystone Heights, FL, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at his residence in Keystone Heights.

He was born in Walnut, NC (Madison County) on April 18, 1924, to Worley and Emma (Stanton) Gentry and was the youngest of six children. Mr. Gentry had been a lifelong resident of Asheville and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church before moving to Keystone Heights in 2005. He attended First Baptist Church in Keystone Heights and retired from Sayles Biltmore Bleacheries as a Millwright in 1985. Mr. Gentry played league baseball and was selected to go to California and start with the “A” Farm Team of the Brooklyn Dodgers. However, due to the U.S. entering WWII, he enlisted in the United States Navy. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Mr. Gentry piloted an LST (Landing Ship Tank) to take troops from ship to shore to invade Normandy at Omaha Beach. He was assigned to the 7th wave of the invasion.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Delma Edna Gentry and son, Rev. Jackie “Jack” Donald Gentry; siblings, Arvil and Donald Gentry, Myrtle Drake (Bill), Angela Cudd (Fred), Gladys Smiley (A.L.), Jean Clark (Gene) and Shelia Chapman (Steve). Mr. Gentry leaves behind a daughter, Angela Sue (Gentry); three grandchildren, Rhonda Gentry Sizemore and Cheyenne Gentry, both of Asheville, and Samuel Christopher Gentry, of Keystone Heights; as well as eight great-grandchildren, Corey, Andrew, Christianna, Mya, Ivy and Wilson Sizemore, of Asheville, North Carolina; and Addie and Jack Gentry and daughter-in-law, Nancy G. Gentry, all of Keystone Heights.

Mr. Gentry’s family will receive friends on Monday, December 2, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Keystone Heights. The Celebration of Life service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Daniel Findley officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Pisgah View Memorial Park, Candler, on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Colman “Jack” Gentry can be made to Operation Barnabus-Osee Trey Fagan, III at 5821 State Road 21, Keystone Heights, FL 32656. Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home is assisting the family in Keystone Heights and Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family locally.

  1. Mr. Gentry probably worked with some of my relatives at the Bleachery in Asheville (Ott & Mae Huntley, Ed Stroupe, Jenny Sorrells). They were about the same age.
