Born in:
Buncombe Co., NC
Resided in:
Asheville, NC
Daniel Clyde Sluder (known as Dan and Papaw Dan to his grandchildren), was born in Alexander, NC on January 30, 1942. He passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by loved ones, early Tuesday morning, October 26, 2021, after a short illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Willie Freeman Sluder, one sister, Josephine Sluder, one brother Tony Sluder, and son Eric Parham.
He is survived by the love of his life Sandra Parham; daughter Tanya Plekan and son-in-law Walt Plekan of Cary, NC, and daughter Cassie Melton and son-in-law Jamin Melton of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Ashlee Neely, Colby Neely, Alex Plekan, Parker Plekan, Jaden Melton, Jaxen Melton, and Jasen Daniel (named after Papaw Dan) Melton; and sisters, Brenda Sluder and Margaret Coe, both of Asheville, NC.
Dan was the proud owner of Sluder’s Inc. d/b/a Leicester Supply of which he worked tirelessly for the past fifty years serving the community of Leicester and surrounding areas. Dan was born a natural entrepreneur who employed many people over the years, but more recently was the employer of JR Ball, Pam Riddle, Gary Verni-Lau, Fred Sexton, Dimas Perez, Heraldo Perez, and Pedro Pablo who he worked along side with every day. He would be seen leaving town before sun up and returning after sun down to ensure the community had goods and services, often working upwards of seventy hours weekly. His strong work ethic and dedication is evident by the successful business he grew from scratch.
Dan could routinely be found helping others with their business ventures, home projects, following Nascar, working in the yard/landscaping, keeping up with the local news, or reading the Wall Street Journal. In addition to work and his family, Dan was an avid dog lover. He lost his beloved Snapple on April 15, 2021, after 15 years of companionship.
The family will receive family and friends on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue between 6-8pm.
The family prefers and wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the French Broad Baptist Church Cemetery Fund: PO Box 122, Alexander, NC 28701 or a charity of your choosing be given in Dan’s honor.
