David Charles Neaville, was born in Akron, Ohio on June 8th, 1952 to Charles and Ella Vivian Sutherland Neaville. He passed away peacefully and surrounded by love on April 2nd, 2021. He was a resident of Akron until moving to Asheville, North Carolina in 2002. He was a 1970 graduate of Kenmore High School and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Akron. David worked in information technology, beginning at Babcock & Wilcox in Barberton, Ohio and ending his career at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, North Carolina. But his life-long passion; his answer to the question “what do you do for a living?” was anything related to the art and science of film and photography.

David was creative, generous and engaging, and curious about all manner of things like retro modern design, cinema—especially foreign films, philosophy and the study of what makes us human. He was a true-blue child of the industrial north and loved exploring and capturing the images of his hometown He had a sweet and kind heart and a wicked sense of humour. He was always asking questions about you in a way that both showed he cared and prodded you to think. Nothing was so serious that a shot of his infectious laughter couldn’t heal.

David is survived by his son, Brian Neaville, his sister, Diane (Edward) Oskins, his cousin zen (Helen) Sutherland, his nephews Zachary and Zane Oskins and his many dear friends.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life from 3:00-5:00 PM on Saturday, April 17 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden. Attendance is limited to 50 at any given time and face coverings are required.

Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Akron, Ohio in October 2021.

Donations may be made in his memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Love you and like you both, David. Always.

Guestbook

  1. My Brother-In-Law was a real soldier- He had an endless supply of perseverance, resilience and fortitude. He never once complained about anything. Never. He took everything in stride and lived his life to its fullest. Smart, funny, talented, contemplative… All attributes that David had and that I admired. He is missed and there’s now a hole in this universe that he once occupied. I love you David and may we meet again…

  2. David was my best friend and companion, my boyfriend and the man that I loved the most. We shared many years and memories that I will always cherish. There are not sufficient words to describe the fine character he displayed. Always kind, warm and generous. He wanted to know your name immediately, conversation soon followed. He and his family always made me feel a welcome part of their lives and they cannot fully know how much that means to me. All who knew him were truly blessed but especially me.
