Dennis Edward Barkley

Dennis Edward Barkley, 91, of J-81 Bear Creek Apartments, Asheville, died Saturday, September 23, 2000, at his home. Mr. Barkley was born in Wake County, NC and was a son of the late Dennis Edward and Florence Craig Barkley. He was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and attended NC State College and business school in Washington, DC. He worked at Enka for a few years before moving to Sylva and working ten years with the Federal Agriculture Department. While in Sylva he was a Boy Scout Leader and a member of the Lions Club. After that he transferred to the NC Wildlife Department and worked as a Wildlife Officer in Eastern NC for 38 years. He was a former resident of Oriental, NC, where he was secretary/treasurer of the Oriental Rotary Club for 25 years and was a member of the Oriental United Methodist Church. Ha and his wife returned to Asheville in 1991. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sue Morrison Barkley; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard Douglas and Clara Barkley, who are missionaries with Mercy Ships; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren. No local services are planned. Friends may call at the home. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.
