Diana Jane Hayes, 77, passed away Friday, June 13, 2025 at Advent Health in Fletcher, NC.

Mrs. Hayes was born in Sayre, PA to the late Leon Claire Hutton and Fern “Jean” Cowan Hutton. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Hutton.

Diana graduated from Graham Junior College, Boston, MA with a degree in accounting. She was a lifelong learner and had worked as an accountant, a computer programmer, former owner/operator of a bed and breakfast off the coast of Maine and authored an autobiography (Double Knit). She was a passionate advocate for Multiple Sclerosis of which she had. She had fundraised for over 25 years for M.S. in Maine and the Carolinas and was active with the M.S. walks. She even initiated change in the insurance/Medicare industry for military people. She taught Bible School, loved beach biking in Hilton Head, spending the summers in Rangeley, Maine, and enjoyed watching sports. She also enjoyed reading her nook, word puzzles, and playing cribbage. She inspired those around her with her keen wisdom and positivity. She loved her family deeply, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Diana is survived by her ex-husband and best friend, Charles Hayes; son, Leon Charles Hayes (Shawn); two brothers, David Hutton (Ursala) and Lynn Hutton (Judy); five grandchildren, Lynnze Jean, Nathin Hayes (Erin Carpenter), Brendan Hayes, Tanner Flores, and Ashlyn Taylor, and four great grandchildren, Levi Naumann, Logan Naumann, Amelia Hayes, and Lucas Naumann.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 21, 2025 at 2PM at Fletcher United Methodist Church with pastor Steven Ray officiating.

I went to school with Diana, and she has been a true inspiration to many..she was kind, compassionate and loving..a sincere giver..always quick with her witticism..she loved to do wheelies in her chair and always had a kind word for everyone..I am proud to call her my friend and I will miss her always..

  2. I met Diana and Chuck at a MS dinner, along with Bev and Russ. It was a quick friendship. In our conversations I learned so much about her sense of humor! Her positivity through everything! I learned much!

  5. I met Chuck and Diana when Diana was my patient in Greenville, SC and fell in love with both of them! Diana was always smiling and upbeat, and always had a laugh ready! I still have her book “Double Knit” which is a very candid autobiography and I’ve actually read it three times! Chuck, my friend, be comforted by the amazing care and love you’ve shown your precious Diana…right up to the day her address changed from earth to heaven! You will see her again…but until then, please view her passing, not as goodbye, but see you later!

  6. We have such fond memories of Diana up in Rangeley. She was an inspirational with her spirit, joy and love.

  7. Diana & Chuck have been our neighbors for almost 7 years at Haywood Knolls. Such a lovely, inspirational couple. They welcomed us into their home for visits and have been very helpful with local information. We cannot say enough about Diana’s indomitable spirit and zest for life. Her quick smile and the grace with which she lived with her physical limitations earned her the admiration of all who knew her. Chuck’s exemplary care and kindness for Diana was an amazing role model for us all. We know she is indeed dancing in heaven, free of any encumbrance. We send our prayers and blessings to Chuck and the family who loved this dear lady.
