Resided in: Fletcher, NC

Dorothy Davis Allen, 95, made her transition on May 19, 2016, while a resident of Universal Healthcare in Fletcher. She was born on Jan 1, 1921 in Asheville, the youngest daughter of sixteen children born to James Nelson and Lily Israel Davis. She lived her entire life in Buncombe County and was the last of 10 siblings who survived into adulthood. She is survived by her son, Dick Allen (Judy); her daughter Susie Allen; two grandchildren Ron Allen (Christine) and Meredith Goodlatte (Doug); four great grandchildren Brooks and Grace Allen, and Madison and Davis Goodlatte, and many nieces and nephews. "Dot" graduated from Biltmore High School in the Class of 1939, and retired from Eaton Corporation in 1986, making many friends along the way. Cooking meals for family and friends, working in her flowers, reading, watching her favorite "soaps", and shopping were some of her favorite activities. She loved taking airline trips with Susie to distant places, and taking auto trips to spend time with grand and great grandchildren. Mother, "Mamaw", "Dot" accepted one and all and inspired many with her zest for life. She will be greatly missed, but the many stories and memories we have of her will live on. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 29, 2016 in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. The family will greet friends at the funeral home following the service. Flowers are appreciated, or if you prefer, a donation may be made in Dot's name to a charity of your choice. The family wants to thank the staff and caregivers of Universal Healthcare, especially Kay Steen, Director of Nursing and her team, and Four Seasons Compassion For Life for the excellent and caring treatment shown to Dot and family.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I worked with Dot at Eaton Corporation. She was such a joy to talk with, enjoyed hearing about her trips with Susie. She was a classy lady, always smiling and friendly to everyone. Dot talked about her children and grandchildren with pride; you were blessed to have a great Mother. Cherish your memories until you meet again.

  2. I use to work with Dot at Eaton and occasionally take her home when her ride had something else to do. I believe she was the last first cousin my grandmother Ollie Davis Ingle 1887-1969 (daughter of Thomas Jefferson Davis 1854-1946) had on the Davis side. She was a lot of fun and loved flying to all those different places with Suzie. It use to make all those women she worked with green with envy. Travel was in the Davis genes. They kid me at church because I go somewhere every month. My great grandfather Tom Davis never did a days work in his life but he traveled all the time. He went from one relative to the other and dead beated off of them a couple of weeks. Clyde Merrill, who married your mother’s sister, told me my Grandpa Davis came to his wedding and went home with them and stayed two weeks. He never for got him. Bruce Whitaker

  3. My condolences,

So sorry for your loss. Such a sweet and classy lady.
what an amazing person and remarkable life. she was
so brave ! I know I can’t make your pain go away, but
I want you to know that I am here for you.

    with deepest sympathy, Eddie Santos

  4. I didn’t know Dot, but she must have been a great person because I do know Susie, who has been such a nice neighbor to me. May God be with your and your family at this time. We are praying for you, Susie. Barbara and Bob Euwer

  5. Mamaw was dearly loved by her entire family and we will sorely miss her. She was the source of so much joy to her kids and grandkids. Her smile lit up the room and her stories and laughter created countless memories for us all. She was a great cook, a great mother, a great grandmother, and a great friend. Most of all she was a gift to all those who knew her and not someone you could forget as she brought so much joy and laughter wherever she went. She loved spending time with and catering to her loved ones and even late in life would be up until we all went to be and wake us in the morning with the smell of bacon on the stove. Heaven assuredly is laughing at her stories today.

  6. To the family we are sorry ro hear of Dot. She was a wonderful person , WE worked at Eaton with her. May God bless and comfort you during these hours.

  7. Just thinking about Dot Allen puts a smile on my face. She sparked joy in each person she met. I was lucky enough to be one of ‘her girls’ in the long list of Susie’s friends. I will carry her memory, laughter, and wisdom with me always. My condolences to the entire Allen Family. Carolyn Jordan

  11. Susie, Dick and family,

I am so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. I have not seen her in years but I do know she was a classy lady. I remember Susie, going to her house on Reed Street when we were in high school. She had such a cute house. Susie and I graduated together and have seen her at Biltmore High School reunions in the past. I live in Raleigh now and won’t be able to attend the celebration but will certainly be thinking of you and the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. May God bless each of you!

  15. It’s hard to believe that Dorthea or Mumsy as I affectionately called her is in another place. Not only was Mumsy a second mother to me, she was also my good friend. I am very saddened by her loss and will cherish the memories we had. I will always remember her abundance of energy, her wit and humor, and all the stories she shared of her life. I admired her culinary talents as she could whip up the best meat loaf and tuna casserole you ever tasted! My thoughts and prayers go out to her wonderful family who were the center of her life. May she rest in peace.

  16. So sorry for the loss of your Mom. I am sure she was so precious to you. As you go thru this proces may gods angels surround you with love. Since you are so incredible, the lady who raised you must be a saint. Know that you are loved by friends who are here to support you through this journey. Please reach out if i can help. I am out of town right now or i would for sure be there sunday as you celebrate her life. May you continue to have sweet memoreis of your Mother. Love to you, Judy, and family.❤️

  17. Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand – chocolate in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOOHOO – What a Ride!
This has always reminded me of Dot. Facing life head-on, with grace and glee. She has been one of my favorite role models.
Our love, Susie and Dick. you had one of the best.

  18. Dick and Susie, I feel so much for your loss as well as Dot’s other family and friends who have written below. It seemed like Dot would be around for ever making it hard to believe she has moved on to greener pastures.

I still hear her voice when working in my kitchen as I did working with her in Ashville. I also recall when she and Susie came to my house in Florida and I asked what she would like to drink. ‘Well I think I’d like a Vodka and soda’. I was kinda taken back as the sun was well (I mean WELL) above the yardarm.

You’ll be surely missed Dot. God Bless.
