Doyle J. Hawkins, age 89, of Candler passed away peacefully Thursday, February 18, 2016, at his residence. He was a son of the late Hobart and Lacy Chambers Hawkins and brother to late sister, Dortha Hawkins Swanger Young. A native of Haywood Co., he spent most of his life in Buncombe County with the exception of 21 years in Knoxville, TN where he was employed with Trailways Bus Lines and the motor freight industry with Thurston Motor Lines/Smith's Transfer Corp. Following retirement in 1988, Doyle served as a volunteer, assistant treasurer, and part-time staff employee in property maintenance at West Asheville Baptist Church where he was a member for 37 years. He is survived by his wife, high school sweetheart, Mae Rogers Hawkins, who he affectionately referred to as "his bride" for 67 years until dementia stole his memory. Also the love and pride in his life are daughters, Susan H. Pitcher of Candler and Maria H. Agostini of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren, Bradley Messer and wife Sarina, Jamie Pitcher, and Chynna Carver; one great-grandson, Bradley Tucker Messer; brother, Troy Hawkins and wife Nevelle of Snellville, GA; and several special nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Groce Funeral Home, Patton Ave., with the Rev. Tony Hooper officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private burial was held on Saturday, February 20, 2016, with the Reverend Dr. Stan Welch officiating. Memorials may be made to West Asheville Baptist Church, Building Fund, 926 Haywood Rd., Asheville NC 28806.

    So sorry you have lost your companion. Life is not easy without them, but knowing we will see them again helps to ease the pain in our hearts. May the Lord give you comfort in the days ahead. It is a wonderful feeling to have family and friends to help fill the void.

  7. My Grandaddy was not a man of many words, but when he spoke people had a tendency to listen. I learned a lot from him. Especially in these final days of his life. He was the most loving man I’ve ever known, always steadfast and reassuring. I’ll miss you Grandaddy, but I’ll see you soon. I love you.

  21. Hi Mae, Susan and Marie, I just today say the obit. for your husband and father. I know the presence of the Holy Spirit is giving you comfort and peace as only He can. My husband, Ronnie and I moved to Sugar Hill Ga to be near our granddaughter who is 10 now and we are enjoying her so much. I am teaching my granddaughter piano as well as some of her friends. I fondly remember our times of learning some beautiful piano pieces and hope you are still playing. You will be in our prayers.
