Herschel “Eddie” Austin, 72, passed away Friday, December 17, 2021.

Born December 25, 1948 in Buncombe Co., Mr. Austin proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps where he received a commendation for his sharpshooting ability. He then worked for many years as a welder.

Eddie will be remembered for his willingness to always help others. He cared for his mother for many years and has helped all of his siblings throughout the years. Without children of his own, Eddie was especially caring towards his pets over the course of his life.

He is survived by his mother, Ruby Alline Penland Austin; siblings, Joseph Ronald Austin, Patricia Chastain, Joyce Watts and Linda Raines; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Pastor Allen Rash, Trinity Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.

His family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider making a contribution towards any organization that helps animals.
