Eleanor Newcomb Rice

October 12, 1924 ~ July 20, 2018
Resided in:
Candler, North Carolina
Eleanor Coleman Newcomb Rice, 93, died Friday, July 20, in Greensboro, her residence for six weeks. For more than 65 years, she happily resided on the Mile Straight in Candler, in the home built by her late husband, Charles Mauck Rice.
Eleanor treasured Candler history and traditions, preserving stories in tape recordings and home movies. She delighted in taking photographs her entire life. Nothing pleased her more than sharing her extensive documentation. Her scrapbooks are legendary, and historians sought her out for her knowledge. She loved building rock walls and regretted giving up her riding mower more than her driver’s license.
She was born October 12, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Charles and Bertha Newcomb. She revered her three older brothers and ensured that younger generations appreciated their unique talents as photographers, broadcasters, and public relations professionals.
When Eleanor was a youngster, her family bought a house in a cove near Mt. Pisgah, where she learned to love the people and customs of Western North Carolina. Her father, then a professional public speaker, traveled the nation addressing civic and business groups, while her mother maintained a loving home for the family. The Newcombs spent summers in North Carolina and returned to Delaware, Ohio, during the school year.
Eleanor graduated from high school in Ohio in 1942. Upon graduation from Ohio Wesleyan University, she returned to North Carolina where she applied her talents in the advertising department at Ivey’s. In 1948, she married Charles Rice, an engineer with the American Enka Co. Later, Eleanor became a Girl Scout leader, was active in the Valley Garden Club, and enjoyed her Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority sisters.
Eleanor and Charles Rice were the parents of three children: Charles Geoffrey Rice of Houston, Texas; Nancy Rice Lassiter of Greensboro (husband Tom); and Susan Mary, who died in infancy.
Other survivors include Ben Lassiter (grandson), his wife Alexandrea, and their son, Alistair, of Mebane; Stephen Lassiter (grandson) and his fiancé, Sarah Gonzalez, of Brooklyn, New York; and numerous nieces and nephews. Stan Woods of Candler is an honorary grandson.
The family greatly appreciates Mountain Home Care, and Hospice in Asheville and Greensboro. They are angels among us.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Montmorenci United Methodist Church in Candler.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.
What a delightful lady was Mrs. Eleanor. She was my Girl Scout leader during my youth and took me and others on wonderful adventures. She always made me smile. Nancy, thank you for taking such good care of her. Our hearts are heavy, but are so glad we had such a special friend. Our prayer is for Peace and Comfort.
Nancy, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Your Mom left a lot of wonderful memories.
Nancy and Jeffery so sorry for your loss I loved her dearly your family is in our prayers.
Dear Family,
I remember with great fondness Charles and Eleanor, and I am sorry to learn of her passing. Having worked with Charles at American Enka and BASF, I appreciated his great skills and expertise. Then, with the Candler Lions, I came to know Eleanor, since Charles was treasurer of the Club, of which I was a member. They both were a pleasure to know and I am sure they both touched many lives. What a great legacy. Our prayers are with you during this time.

Eleanor was a legend in her own time in Candler! She was an amazing historian, brilliant woman who was respected very much in our valley. Montmorenci United Methodist Church loved her. We are grateful for her long life in these mountains that she loved. Nancy and Jeffrey, you are all in our prayers.
I only had the pleasure of knowing Eleanor for a few years but she quickly shared her love of the Mile Straight, Sam’s Branch and family history. She liked to document activities by taking photos. Eleanor is infamous at the local drugstore for the many disposable cameras they sold. I will miss the glee she exhibited with each click of the camera! My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Nancy and family-
I am honored to have met Elanor and to have heard some of her stories. I am sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Jenny Martin
Eleanor and Charles were wonderful people! My husband, Joel, and I had the pleasure of renting Sam’s Branch when we first moved to Asheville 18 years ago. We were moving from Athens, Ohio and I think that helped us secure the house! Eleanor was always such a hard worker, keeping up with the beautiful property and all the rock work. I fondly remember when they invited us to their house for dinner and to learn about all the history of Candler…and Ohio. Sending lots of love to the family!
We were very sorry to hear of Eleanor’s passing last week. She was instrumental in getting a library branch in the Enka-Candler Community. She supported us for years as a faithful member of the Friends of the Library and even made us one of those famous scrapbooks! Very sorry for your loss and she will definitely be missed.
Dear Nancy, Your mother was a phenomenal woman and an inspiration to me. She devoted years to our Girl Scout Troop, guiding us in advancing mentally, spiritually, and physically. Thanks to her, I have many fond memories of our weekly meetings, camping trips, and social events. Thanks to you and to Geoffery for sharing your parents with me and so many of the young folks of Hominy Valley. Fondly, Marty
