Ellis G. Sumner, 82, of 317 Johnston School Road, Asheville, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002, in an Asheville hospital.
Mr. Sumner was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Cary and Hattie Cook Sumner. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mildred Hawkins Sumner who died in 1998 and by a brother, Leo Sumner.
He was an Army veteran of WW II and was retired after 26 years as a computer programmer for the National Climatic Center. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.
He is survived by one son, Larry Sumner and his wife Jeani of Asheville; one brother, Perry Sumner and his wife Elizabeth of Pensacola, FL; a sister-in-law Mildred Y. Sumner of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Kim Sampson and Jamie Stamey; great-granddaughter Taylor Stamey; and a special great-grandson Alex Gaddy.
Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Alex H. Hanks at 11:00 am Saturday at Bell United Methodist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 1201 Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC 28804.
