Ellis G. Sumner

Ellis G. Sumner, 82, of 317 Johnston School Road, Asheville, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002, in an Asheville hospital. Mr. Sumner was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Cary and Hattie Cook Sumner. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mildred Hawkins Sumner who died in 1998 and by a brother, Leo Sumner. He was an Army veteran of WW II and was retired after 26 years as a computer programmer for the National Climatic Center. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. He is survived by one son, Larry Sumner and his wife Jeani of Asheville; one brother, Perry Sumner and his wife Elizabeth of Pensacola, FL; a sister-in-law Mildred Y. Sumner of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Kim Sampson and Jamie Stamey; great-granddaughter Taylor Stamey; and a special great-grandson Alex Gaddy. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Alex H. Hanks at 11:00 am Saturday at Bell United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 1201 Riverside Drive, Asheville, NC 28804.
