Eugene "Gene" V. Coleman
Arden, NC - Eugene "Gene" Victor Coleman, a resident of Heather Glen at Ardenwoods, peacefully slipped the bonds of Earth on May 24, 2011. He was five days short of his 89th birthday. Gene was born and raised in the Kanawha Valley, WV.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 69 years, Dilys Davies Coleman, originally of Saskatchewan, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Beatrice Murray Coleman, as well as five of his six siblings.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gary and his wife, Patty, of Asheville and Craig and his wife, Diane, of Henderson, NV and one daughter, Kelley Sober and her husband, Steven of Denver, CO, who will all miss his love, humor, and wise council. Also surviving are one sister, Beatrice Clark of Charleston, WV; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren that will also miss their gramps.
As a member of the Greatest Generation, Gene enlisted in the United States Navy in 1940, rising through the ranks to become an officer. His distinguished 26-year career included service during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Upon retirement from the Navy, he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from San Diego State College. Thereafter, he taught Ecology and Land Utilization at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA for twelve years. During his second retirement, he devoted himself to fishing and crabbing on Puget Sound, local politics, and his beloved Atlanta Braves. His was a life well lived. He goes now to a place where the fish are always biting and the Braves always win.
The family is grateful for the warm and loving care by the staff at John F. Keever Solace Center, where memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers at carepartners.org.
A Celebration of Genes life will be held at Ardenwoods at a later date.

Gene was one of a kind and one of the best neighbors a person could have. No one will remember but I do……in our old neighborhood I was walking my Collie and was being cornered by two loose dogs and who did I see coming down the street rifle in hand……Gene. I miss his letters to the Editor. I appreciated his excellent advice when a code inspector was making unreasonable demands. Gene you made an impact on my life.

Miles, have over the years prevented us from being better aquainted. The few family re-unions we have been able to have, have been heart warming.Lovely memories and heart felt sympathies to all the family. Gill and Alan.
Dilys – our love, prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. Gene will be missed, what a wonderful man! He left his mark on everyone he met. Gene had a heart of gold. We miss out chats with Gene. God Bless
When I think of Gene and Dilys, I remember the wonderful neighborhood get togethers in Oak Harbor, Washington, in the Seaview Subdivision that they were so much a part of. I also remember the slides that Gene shared with some of us after their trip to Africa. Gene was one in a million and as fate would have it, it appears that North Carolina was a settling spot for us also. You will be missed, Gene, but you will now rest in peace. Love to Dilys and hopes that she will find solace in the fact that so many cared for Gene so very much.
Dilys I am so sorry to hear about Gene. My children and I love both of you! Gene was a wonderful man and I will never forget how he looked after us all those years in sea view. I can just picture Gene and Steve in heaven fishing and laughing. Love Bonnie
So sorry to hear about Gene. I hope he and my Dad meet up for a cigar and good scotch. God Bless you Dilys.
Dylis, I am so sad to hear about Gene the jelly bean man. I always have thought of you both as my pseudo grandparents all these years and have a very close spot in my heart for you both. I love you!

You were such good friends to my mom and dad. I will always remember the warmth of your smile and how glad you always were to see me. Love to you Dilys. Terri
Thinking of Gene and my Grandpa today. I’m sure they’re together again remembering all their good times and talking about the huge salmon that DIDN’T get away! My thoughts are with you Dilys.
I remember Gene when I lived with my mom and step dad (Fred & Linda Bishop). When the Colemans moved out of their house in the Sea View division my mom and I always wondered how they were doing and was missed so much. My heart goes out to the family…he was missed before but knowing he has passed away doesnt make the missing of him go away. RIP Mr. Coleman…you were such a wonderful man and loved by so many..
So sorry to hear about Uncle Gene’s passing! You are all in our prayers!
