Evelyn Shook Whitton, 92, of Asheville, died on Friday, May 1, 2015, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center. Born in Asheville on October 23, 1922, Mrs. Whitton was a daughter of the late Maurice and Mabel Shook. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl Thomas Whitton, who died in 2007; brothers, Lawrence and Paul Shook; and sister, Ruth Hampton. Mrs. Whitton is survived by her daughter, Beth W. Bell and husband, James A. Bell; three grandchildren, Christina E. Bell, Laura M. Bell and Timothy Jacob Bell; brothers, Robert and Glenn Shook; and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn was known for her kind and generous spirit. For years, she provided care for her disabled father following his stroke, and later for other elderly relatives in need, including aunts and an uncle. In the latter years she took care of her husband, Carl, when he became disabled. Evelyn's family is familiar with her beautiful smile and kind spirit, and of the many times she reached out to each of us in our time of need. While living in Birmingham, AL, Evelyn served as a Girl Scout leader from 1964 to 1976. Upon moving to Asheville, Evelyn and her husband, Carl, became members of First Baptist Church of Asheville in 1978. Evelyn assisted with counting the offering, she sang in the choir for several years, and provided table decorations for church dinners and decorative bulletin boards for the Sunday School. She also worked as office manager for Fishburne International, in Arden. Evelyn is loved and missed by her family and friends. To all of us, her life exemplified what it means to be a Prov. 31 woman. She opened her hand to the needy and the fruit of her hands and works "praise her in the gates." Services to celebrate the life of Evelyn will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. David Warren officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

  1. I feel grateful and blessed to have been able to care for Evelyn over the last few years . She has shared with me some of her sweetness and joy of the simple things in life , and I loved her like an adopted Mother ! We were bed buddies and friends and she encouraged me with my children and grand children and listened to my stories , and tolerated my attempts at playing ukulele for her . I will cherish the fond memories of the time we spent together and will miss her dearly.
Thank you to her wonderful family for sharing your Mom, and Nana with us and allowing all of us into your lives , she has enriched ours with her faith , kindness and love ! I am forever grateful,
    Johanna
