Frances Meryl Capps Coggins, 89, of 146 McKinnish Cove Rd., Asheville, died on Thursday, September 4, 2008, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.
Mrs. Coggins was born in Madison County and was a daughter of the late William Riley and Ollie Cody Capps. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Coggins, who died in 1998. She was retired from Singer-Kearfott and was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church for 56 years.
Surviving are three sisters; Virginia Towe, of Candler, and Kathleen Capps and Mildred Austin, of Asheville; a brother, Robert Capps, of Asheville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 5:00 p.m. Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Dr. James H. Johnson and Darryl Searcy officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

To Meryl’s Family,
Some of my earliest memories of Halloween were going to the Coggins household with Gary Michael Merrill trick-or-treating. JD would always hide Gary’s candy and make him cry and Meryl would always be petting Gary and fussing at JD for stirring things up. She fussed around Gary like a mother hen and scolded JD in the same breath. She was a sweetie.
