Gussie Viola Wells Jones, 93, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 15, 2005.
Born in Haywood County on May 17, 1911, she lived all except one year of her life in the Leicester Community of Buncombe County.
A daughter of the late Charles Andrew and Armentle Levadie Parham Wells, she was also preceded in death by six brothers, three sisters, and her loving husband of 52 years, Jesse Sherman Jones, who died December 31, 1979. A farmer and homemaker, Gussie loved to garden and was known for the lovely flowers she grew with such care. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children Andrew Jones and his wife Lucy of Leicester, Gladys Riddle and her husband Troy of Swannanoa, Linda Hoglen and her husband Rex of Leicester and Wanda Ward and her husband Howard of Leicester; her grandchildren Larry Jones and his wife Rose Ellen of Leicester, Janice Husebo and her husband Janney of Asheville, Sharon Helton and her husband Dale of Asheville, Vicki Greene and her husband Alan of Roanoke, VA, and Brandon Ward of Leicester; her great-grandchild Rodney Ward and his wife Rebecca of Black Mountain; and her great-great-grandchild Jason Ward of Black Mountain.
A funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Ricky Wolfe of Beulah Baptist Church and the Rev. David Plemmons of Leicester Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, North Turkey Creek Road, Leicester. Pallbearers will be Larry Jones, Janney Husebo, Dale Helton, Alan Greene, Brandon Ward and Rodney Ward.
Her family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon following the service.
