Harold Rogers, 79, died Thursday, July 2, 2015. A native of Buncombe County, Mr. Rogers was the son of the late Woodrow B. and Kathleen Clark Rogers. His career as an educator included 36 years at Erwin High School where he taught biology and drivers ed, and where he served as Assistant Principal for 26 years. He was very active in school and extracurricular activities, serving as announcer for sporting events and coordinator for bus drivers. He made many lasting friendships with school administrators, staff members, former students, drivers and members of the community. Erwin High School honored him by naming the administrative building office complex for him. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Rogers Brown and her husband, Dwight, grandchildren, Brock and Bianca. and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Michael McFarland officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Fund for Needed Student School Supplies, Erwin High School, 60 Lees Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  5. Mr. Rogers was a great teacher and such a nice man. I am thankful I got to visit him at the Brian Center. I had the opportunity to tell him he was my favorite teacher. He always had a smile. My sympathy goes out to all his family.

  9. Was sorry to learn of Harold’s passing. He was my Biology teacher in high school and a high school classmate of my husband’s. It was always nice to talk with him when he attended our class reunions and our monthly luncheons. Prayers for the family.

  11. Harold Rogers was an outstanding teacher and school administrator who loved Erwin High School and all the communities in the Erwin district. His knowledge of the area is unmatched. He will be missed by all who knew him. I thank him for introducing me to my wife!

  12. Harold was my cousin on my mother’s side. There were many times I stayed with Harold and his family as a child? Then later he was my drivers Ed teacher and also he helped me with science projects and reports during college. I have many fond and humorous stories. I am so grateful that we had a family reunion in March which Harold attended.

  14. Mr. Rogers was a fine, upstanding individual and a great role model. It was evident that he truly cared for his students. Years after I graduated, I enjoyed seeing his smiling face at Happy Hill. It was an honor to have known this man.

  15. Mr. Rogers was a good man. He was one of the finest people Erwin High School ever had to grace the doors. I was lucky to have him in my life as a teacher from 1976-1980 and a friend after leaving school. God Bless Harold Rogers.

  16. Harold Rogers was a find man, teacher, friend and person in general. He always was willing to help out his bus drivers and any of the sattlite school drivers. He will certainly be missed for his personality and his generosity. A fine man on all ways.

  17. It was our pleasure to have known Harold Rogers. Used to enjoy seeing him at George’s Deli & get to visit with him & then again at Happy Hill. He was a fine man & loved to sit & visit. It amazed me how he kept up with so many of his former students. He was a special person.

  20. The Erwin Community has lost a great friend, neighbor, and past-educator in the passing of Harold. Harold was my Biology teacher at Erwin High. Over the years, he was a big part in our reunions and provided us with much information in locating our students. He never missed a meeting; nor, did he miss a reunion. This past March 21st, the reunion committee members of the 1963 graduating class surprised him with a 79th birthday breakfast. My deepest condolences to each of his family. May God comfort each of you.

  22. It was a pleasure working with Harold. I could always count on him to help out with activity buses and school buses. He shared a lot of good ideas on administrative matters with me. My prayers are with his family.

  25. I graduated from Erwin HS in 1979. I come to know Mr. Rogers from laying out of school. Many years later while working as a deputy for the Buncombe County Sheriffs Department I responded to an alarm at Erwin HS. Mr. Rogers also responded and recognized me and laughed. He just smiled and said ‘so this is where you ended up ‘ over the years I have had many conversations with Mr. Rogers and he loved the Erwin Community and Erwin HS. The community lost a good man who can never be replaced. Today is truly a sad day. May God bless Mr. Rogers family….RIP Mr. Rogers.

  26. Harold Rogers was one off the nicest teachers a Clyde A, Erwin High school, I also had him for my Biology teacher in 1963. He will always be remember for that wonderful smile on his face and being so friendly to everyone. We are so sorry for your loss.   27. We always said Harold should run for office….he knew everybody! We learned a lot about how to deal with students by noting his firm, fair and friendly methods. It was a blessing and a privilege to work with him.

He loved to talk about ‘Erwin kids’ and his words always gracious and positive. I am sure he is so happy to know how truly important his life, friendship, encouragement, discipline, quick smile and huge heart meant to each of us. His earthly body may have failed him but his new one is perfect….so is his reward. Thank you for everything Mr. Rogers.

Prayers for comfort and peace for his family and friends. I never realized in 1959 when he was my teacher that he was only 9 years older than me.

  45. RIP Mr. Rogers. I had you for drivers ed. & saw you every day that I went to ERWIN. I also lived in your neighborhood (West Buncombe) & saw you a lot at your house. Saw you in the grocery store 6 years ago & you recognized me & came up to me & said hello I didn’t see you but like I said you saw me & made it a point to come up to me & thanked me for my service in the Army. I was in the class of 68 & to have you say that meant so much to me. Now to your family I would like to Thank them & you for your years of dedication to ERWIN.

  46. Cindy, I remember your dad with much fondness. He always had a bright smile with a twinkle in his eyes. He always seemed to have a happy upbeat attitude. When my boys were small and you were small the adults would stay up late playing hearts, spades or yatzee. If at my house all children were asleep and your dad would always be leaving with you in his arms.

  48. Very sorry to hear about Harold Rogers’ passing. I met him in the 1960’s when he would announce at Erwin sporting events. My dad, Bill Williams coached girls basketball those years. He and Harold were fast friends and dad always enjoyed teaching driver’s education with him. Dad would often tell humorous stories of their times spent together at Erwin. I enjoyed seeing him a couple of years ago at Lowe’s in Asheville and catching up on some old times. I always liked his friendly demeanor and his quick smile. I’ll always have good memories of him.   51. Mr. Rogers was a kind, caring, smiling, positive, and inspirational man. Any school would have been lucky to have him as an Educator, Bus Driver or Vice Principle.. But fortunately for us, it was Erwin. He knew me & my family..like everyone else that came through that school.   54. Harold was a sweet man and will be missed by our family. He was part of our Christmas Eve celebration for many years and always brought a smile on his face (and a veggie plate to share). He touched many lives in the Erwin Community, but for our family, Christmas Eve will not be the same without his presence.
