“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.” A mansion stood empty, bought and paid for 2000 years ago by the blood of Jesus. Wednesday, the doors opened and Jesus sent angels to carry its owner Home.
Harrice Gerome (H.G.) Hudgins went home Wednesday. He went to be with the one he loved and served for almost 60 years. He was welcomed home by Jesus and his precious granddaughter, Haela Gabrielle Hensley.
A native of Yancey Co., H.G. was the son of the late Rev. James Dexter and Althea Robertson Hudgins. In his life he has been a Baptist pastor, co-pastor, choir director, chairman of the building committee, and trustee. He founded and operated Hearts for the Appalachian People, a ministry serving Harlan Co., KY and the surrounding areas. His greatest desire was to help others and through that, see them give their hearts to the Lord.
A carpenter for most of his life, when given a piece of wood, he was happy. Several area churches use pulpits built by H.G.
Left to go on without him for awhile are his wife and soulmate, Brenda Littrell Hudgins; sons, Steven and Michelle, Barry, Darin and Heather, Brett and Pam, Kelly and Marcie and Ray and Linda; daughters, Glenda Darlene Hudgins and her fiancée Lee, Terri Lynn and Jeff Huey, Lana and Ken Torres and Patricia Reed; and brothers, Mark Hudgins, Rufus Hudgins, and Luke Hudgins. He loved his family and they always came before everything but God, but his grandbabies were his pride and joy. He said grandkids should have come first. He leaves his legacy with his 31 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren
Services for H.G. will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Lee Davis, Jack Gassaway and Cecil Robinson officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and at other times, the family will be at H.G.’s home at 41 Mt. Carmel Dr., Asheville.
My daddy is very missed. I don’t know how to feel or what to say.
I have wonderful memories of my daddy and know that he will be watching over the family thru this hard time- like he always did.
Daddy is a warm kind giving person and this world will be a lonely place without him.
I love you my daddy and I will see you again someday.
H.G. WAS MY GRANDFATHER. I SPENT EVERY YEAR LOOKING FORWARD TO CHRISTMAS AT HIS HOUSE. WE HAD LOTS OF FUN VISITING WITH FAMILY AND OPENING PRESENTS AND EATING A GREAT MEAL, BUT HE ALWAYS KEPT THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS IN THE EVENT BY READING THE CHRISTMAS STORY OUT OF THE BIBLE. ALTHOUGH I KNOW THAT HE WILL BE THERE AT CHRISTMAS IN SPIRIT, IT’LL NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT THE SOUND OF HIS VOICE. I KNOW THAT HE IS WHERE HE WANTED TO BE AND I AM SO HAPPY FOR HIM. BUT THE SELFISH PART OF ME IS VERY SAD. I’M GOING TO MISS HIM AND I WISH THAT MY KIDS COULD HAVE KNOWN HIM BETTER. MY GRANDFATHER MADE HEAVEN SOUND SO WONDERFUL THAT WHEN HEARING HIM TALK ABOUT IT YOU WANTED TO GO AS BAD AS HE DID. AND ONE DAY I WILL. I KNOW THAT HE’LL BE WAITING THERE FOR ALL OF HIS LOVED ONES TO JOIN HIM. UNTIL THEN, HE’LL BE IN MY HEART.
WE have not seen Harrice in years but we will know him when we get home with him & GOD will know us.
KEN & GENELLE AUSTIN SR;
I only knew him for a little while, the memoreies will last forever.
I had the great pleasure of meeting HG at the Shook Family Reunion just two weeks ago! I shall be forever changed by his strong character, infectious smile, wonderful hugs, and kind words.
Though your hearts are saddened I am assured of the celebration in Heaven as he has gone Home.
Brenda and family, We are sory to hear of the loss of your loved one. May God comfort and bless you and ease your sorrow.
Our hearts goes out to this entire family. Death is never an easy process no matter how prepared you try to be. Please take comfort in knowing that HG is in a Glorious Place where he will NEVER know pain or sickness again! Lana…you, Talon and your entire family are in our prayers, always! We love ya girl!
Physically separated, but ALWAYS LOVED! Daddy, WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER AND JESUS COMES TO BRING ME HOME, THEN WE WILL BE TOGETHER TO SPEND ETERNITY IN THE PRESENCE OF THE GOD WE HAVE BOTH LOVED AND WORSHIPPED! And even though we have never been very close, I LOVE YOU AND I WILL MISS YOU UNTIL YOU COME TO GREET ME AND WELCOME ME INTO THAT MANSION THAT WILL NEVER END!
For many years, we lived on Mt. Carmel – and your kids worked for me, Brenda – and helped w/ yard work, etc.
I am so sorry to hear about your husband, Harrice. * I always knew that he loved the Lord !
Even though you and I didn’t always see eye to eye……we were neighbors.
I have moved on, moving to E. Asheville – but have fond memories of your boys.
May God Bless you in the next few days – as reality of loosing your hubby sets in.
I lost my dad in November – and previous to that lost two brothers – so I know the feeling of grief and pain and suffering (divorce, etc.).
BRENDA, WORDS CAN NOT EXPRESS HOW SORRY WE ARE FOR YOUR LOSS. PLEASE KNOW WE ARE PRAYING FOR YOU AND THE CHILDREN. DAYS WILL BE HARD, JUST LOOK TO JESUS, HE WILL HOLD YOU CLOSE AS YOU GO THROUGH THIS.
